The US has imposed sanctions on 64 Georgian citizens and government officials who have undermined democracy and violated human rights in the country. This was reported by press service US Department of State.
The list of those subject to restrictions includes senior state and municipal figures who “abuse their authority to restrict the fundamental freedoms of the Georgian people”. The list also includes corrupt businessmen and members of the Georgian parliament.
The Foreign Ministry stressed that Washington is concerned about the anti-democratic actions of republican officials and will continue to consider new sanctions.
At the end of July, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken statedWashington is suspending more than $95 million in aid to Georgia, saying it believes the government’s actions are incompatible with its membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO, citing Tbilisi’s “false and anti-democratic statements”.
At the same time, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze commented Statement by US Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien on the possibility of new American sanctions against the republic. The Prime Minister noted that speaking to Georgia in the language of blackmail would have the opposite effect.
