What can guests of the Gdańsk Book Fair see? “Gazeta Wyborcza” claims that “one” of the events at the European Solidarity Centre will be… a biography of Jerzy Urban.
Urban took aim at both old comrades and current celebrities, sacred cows included, but he could also write well about those he disagreed with, as long as he appreciated their achievements.
– writes Katarzyna Wężyk in an article in the newspaper Michnika.
Where does this text come from? It turns out to be from October last year. However, it was recalled on the occasion of the upcoming event in Gdańsk.
The biography “Urban”, written by Dorota Karaś and Marek Sterlingow, will be one of the events of this year’s Gdańsk Book Fair (13-15 September) at the European Solidarity Center. On this occasion, we would like to remind you of the text published in “Wyborcza” in October 2023
– we read.
What did editor Wężyk notice in Urban’s biography? She found not only a “brilliant intelligence”, but also a fan of a comfortable life.
Their ‘Urban’ is a story about a brilliantly intelligent and unscrupulous opportunist who liked to live comfortably and was not ashamed of it. And since he happened to live in the Polish People’s Republic, he took advantage of the opportunities that real socialism offered (to a few). When the Polish People’s Republic collapsed, he converted his talents, unscrupulousness and worldview into money in the emerging Polish capitalism.
– we read.
There was also a fragment about the attitude of the Church and Urbanus towards this issue.
Looking from today’s perspective at the involvement of the Polish Church in politics and the nationalist populism of the ruling party – as well as at Licheń, the law defending the good name of John Paul II, and PiS politicians dancing on the birthday of Radio Maryja – one might wonder whether it wasn’t also the spokesperson’s fault, at least partly a matter of taste and whether he is the only one who needs an iron stomach
– writes a journalist from “Wyborcza”.
Response
Piotr Semka commented on the Wyborcza article.
Urban as a pest farmer. Where? In the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk. For this occasion it was transformed into a meeting place for red Goebbels lovers. The historical policy of the Platform smiles at the residents of Gdańsk with a crooked smile
– we read in the columnist’s article.
