““The EC report of July 2023 mentioned the case of Pablo Gonzalez as one of the reasons for the negative assessment of the rule of law in Poland under the PiS government,” MEP Maciej Wąsik said in an interview with the portal wPolityce.pl. He revealed that former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration Mariusz Kamiński had submitted a letter to the European Commission requesting verification of false information. “We are dealing with a total disgrace of this document. Its creators should be interested in verifying all this,” the former minister of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery said. The latest issue of the weekly magazine “Sieci” describes the case of a dangerous spy and high-ranking officer of Russian military intelligence, who was defended by the elites of the Third Polish Republic.
The prisoner exchange between the West and Russia that took place a few days ago included: Pavel Rubtsov, a spy and a Russian military intelligence officer, held by the Internal Security Service in Poland. He posed as Pablo Gonzalez, a Spanish journalist.
We remember how the elites associated with the opposition raged and defended Pablo Gonzalez when he was detained by the Internal Security Service in Przemyśl in late February 2002. After all, this case was included in the European Commission’s report on the rule of law in our country
– says Maciej Wąsik, Member of the European Parliament for Law and Justice, to the wPolityce.pl portal.

The EC report defended Gonzalez, a Russian spy
This report was published in July 2023. It pointed to the Gonzalez case as one of the reasons for the negative assessment of the state of the rule of law in Poland under the PiS regime. It stated that a Spanish journalist was held in custody without any significant evidence. The EC report is still available
– Maciej Wąsik reminds us.
Pavel Rubtsov, or Pablo Gonzalez, even though he is a high-ranking GRU officer, can still count on the support of some politicians.
Mariusz Kamiński has submitted an interpellation to the European Commission about the report. In a special letter, he points out the huge mistake the EC made based on incorrect information and false assumptions. After all, unverified media reports were cited, even pro-Kremlin reports. Even if they were not initiated by the Kremlin, they were copied by the so-called useful idiots. Mariusz Kamiński will demand verification of this report. Since it was concluded that the reason for the low level of the rule of law in Poland was the arrest of a Russian spy, we are dealing with a complete disgrace of this document. Its creators should verify all this
– emphasizes the former deputy head of the CBA.
Wąsik has no illusions that the Kremlin still has enormous influence in Poland and can influence public opinion.
I think Putin sometimes looks at all this and laughs. He probably repeats to himself that he doesn’t need to send his services, because others will do all the work for them. It’s enough for PiS to make a gesture against Russia and the country is immediately attacked by political opponents. Today they are the government, but back then it was the total opposition. Every PiS action, even those directed against Russia, was attacked extremely by the opposition of the time. The example of Pablo Gonzalez is proof of this, but not the only one. It was a total opposition that attacked our government, no matter what it did
– summarises the MEP Law and Justice.
