The implementation of artificial intelligence in the army is a major challenge that cannot be avoided – said the former commander of GROM, General Roman Polko, in the PAP Studio. He added that the air defense system must first be supported by AI.
Maj. Gen. Karol Molenda, commander of the Cyberspace Defense Forces Component, said in late July at the PAP Studio that a new unit of the Polish Army is being built – the Artificial Intelligence Implementation Center, where he wants to implement solutions using AI aspects to support commanders in decision-making.
The ability to quickly analyze large amounts of data can certainly be an advantage for the commander when making decisions
– said General Molenda, who assured that this tool “will be a game changer”.
“The artificial intelligence system must be well prepared.”
General Polko in the PAP Studio, referring to these announcements, stressed that the KWOC commander and his subordinates “are at the forefront because they are waging war in cyberspace.” He added that the implementation of AI in the military is a “major challenge that cannot be avoided.”
Of course, the air defense system should be the first to be supported by artificial intelligence. It is impossible to react (quickly) when we are discussing, even at a political level, whether or not to launch missiles. Here, the artificial intelligence system must be well prepared
– he judged.
According to the former GROM commander, the implementation of AI, apart from the obvious positive aspects, can also bring threats. Therefore, the systems must be designed in such a way that “they do not escalate actions or cause tragic mistakes.”
The use of AI systems in the military
In July, General Molenda stressed in the PAP Studio that in the case of using AI aspects, it is ultimately the commander who will have to make the decision, and artificial intelligence, using sensors that are present in every new military solution today (for example, the F-35 aircraft) would quickly analyze large amounts of data collected in the area of operations, suggesting the best solution. He stressed that not only Poland, but also other innovative countries are working on using AI to give the commander an advantage in decision-making.
This is our plan for the future
– he added.
