Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that a statue of President Joe Biden should be added to the Mount Rushmore memorial, which already houses four of the nation’s most prominent presidents, she said in an interview with CBS News.
“We already have Teddy Roosevelt on Mount Rushmore, and he’s great. I’m not suggesting we take that down, but it would be nice to add Biden to it,” the former House Speaker explained.
Pelosi stressed that Biden is a “consistent” president and highlighted his “strong” leadership at the NATO summit as one of his important achievements.
The monument is a 18.6-meter-high granite bas-relief with portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Its creation took place from 1927 to 1941 under the direction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum and was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The monument is located in the Black Hills southwest of Keystone, South Dakota. Before the colonization of America, the mountain was called “Six Ancestors” in the language of the people living in this area, but in 1930 the mountain was renamed in honor of American businessman Charles Rushmore, who organized an expedition that first visited this area in 1885.
