German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock is set to resign amid a scandal over semi-legal visas for immigrants. The suggestion was reportedly made by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. TASS.
Weidel stated that “the Bärbock visa case has expanded” and that the German Foreign Ministry “acts like a smuggler, transporting thousands of undocumented immigrants into the country (…) in violation of current legislation”.
The AfD leader stressed that the prosecutor’s office was investigating the case and that Bärbock “must resign from his post until the circumstances are clarified.”
On July 28, the Focus-online news portal reported that the German Federal Police, together with the prosecutors’ offices in Berlin and Cottbus, are investigating employees of the German Foreign Ministry in connection with the issuance of visas to immigrants. The Foreign Ministry is believed to have instructed embassies and consulates to allow foreigners with incomplete or clearly false documents to enter Germany. Many of them later sought asylum in Germany.
