“The success of this summit and previous decisions is that Ukraine has a clear prospect of joining NATO if it meets the criteria, former President Bronisław Komorowski noted in PR24. Speaking about cohabitation, he said that there were no disagreements on security issues, noting that this was not always the case. He decided to… attack PiS. “Mr. Macierewicz has removed everything that did not smell of PiS,” he said.
In the broadcast “24 Questions”, Komorowski was asked about the NATO summit and the fact that Ukraine has not yet received an invitation to join the Alliance.
Any dissatisfaction would be inappropriate in this case; no one promised or announced that a decision would be taken now on Ukraine’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance. All countries said that this was impossible during hostilities
– he pointed.
The success of this summit and previous decisions is that Ukraine has a fairly clear perspective of joining NATO if it meets the criteria.
– takes note of the former President and recalls that Poland also met the criteria for being admitted to the Alliance.
At the same time, as an alliance we want to help Ukraine survive this war crisis in the best possible conditions
– he assured.
He added that NATO membership is “a kind of security guarantee for Ukraine” for Western countries.
But Ukraine will save its independence
– Komorowski explained.
“This is a bit unfair.”
This is a serious matter, such great restraint, I would say: the fear of the North Atlantic Alliance not to allow Ukraine to fully utilize the equipment it receives from the Western world.
– said the former president.
It is a little unfair when we hand over rockets and say: but you can only fire them, for example, in combat areas. Although everyone knows that the art of war involves, for example, the ability to gather huge supplies, usually at a greater distance from the area involved in the fighting
– added.
So I hope that NATO, and especially the US, will not necessarily be very vocal, but will give such permission, because they are giving more and more permission. Perhaps there should be a reflection within the Alliance that whoever gives quickly, gives twice. There is no point in giving so much that Ukraine cannot use it, and then after a year or two, when it is too late, to go into this issue. I hope that NATO will make an effort to overcome the fear of escalation, in favor of attacks that will be painful for the Russians, also outside the territory of Ukraine
– he emphasized.
Relations between government and president
Cooperation between government and president – going well?
The disputes were not postponed because there was no discussion about what was important for Polish defense. Fortunately, the avoidance of spectacular, different positions in the field of security policy remains
– Komorowski said, and then decided to… attack PiS.
And this did not happen after PiS took power. The best generals were thrown out, all weapons programs were canceled because they were formulated by their predecessors, for example, the Caracal or Patriot missiles, which should have been in Poland in 2018. Mr. Macierewicz removed everything that did not smell of PiS
– he said.
The former president also referred to Polish-Ukrainian relations, including with regard to their common history, especially Volhynia.
This topic will never be closed because it lives in the Polish memory. The question is how it should live, because if it is shared as much as possible, if drama is experienced in mutual relations, then it is good. However, if it has to live as a memory of something that has not yet been completed, then it is bad. I am glad because I think that things are going in the right direction. In my time, work was carried out in Volhynia and Ukrainians took part in it. This was the seed of good relations, but then the excavations were stopped. If they return, this will be a good way to complete the painful history of Polish-Ukrainian relations during the Second World War.
– he judged.
When it comes to security, the previous government may not have cared whether something “smelled like PiS” or not, but rather whether it was good for Poland at some point. The former president also somehow overlooked the fact that the then opposition during the PiS government criticized and ridiculed all purchases and contracts of ministers Macierewicz and Błaszczak.
