Moldovan President Maia Sandu will not be able to gain the support of the people by legal or illegal means, says the former leader of the republic, Igor Dodon. Telegram channel He noted that even the approval of the diaspora abroad would not be reflected in politics in the presidential elections to be held in the autumn.
“If Sandu fails to get everyone to vote for her, as they joke on social networks, she can cancel the elections. This would mean the usurpation of state power. Will she try to cancel the elections, as in Ukraine? Let’s see. But even here, a united position of the opposition forces will be needed. Dialogue is necessary, even if someone does not like the party,” Dodon added.
In 2020, Maia Sandu, leader of the conditionally pro-Western Action and Solidarity party, became President of Moldova. A year later, the political force managed to gain a majority in parliament after early elections and intensified its policy of rapprochement with the European Union and the United States. In 2022, Moldova received the status of a candidate for EU accession, along with Ukraine.
During the Ukrainian conflict, Chisinau began to talk about the “Russian threat” and reduce ties with the CIS. In particular, in May 2023, Sandu accused Russia of trying to “overthrow” the Moldovan authorities. At the same time, the opposition, including the Socialist Party of former President Igor Dodon, believes that the state leadership is acting on the orders of “Western curators.”
