Neither Voivode Krzysztof Jan Klęczar (PSL) nor MP Łukasz Kmita (PiS) was elected Marshal of Małopolska. None of the candidates received the necessary majority of votes. Klęczar was supported by 18 council members, Kmita by 14.
39 votes were valid, seven were invalid.
An extraordinary session will be held
Jan Tadeusz Duda announced that on the same day, on Monday evening, an extraordinary session would be held in which a new, fourth attempt would be made to elect the marshal. Such a session is held at the request of KO.
MP Łukasz Kmita has so far been the only candidate for the position of marshal, but in previous election attempts he failed to win a majority of votes, even though PiS has a majority in the Voivodeship Assembly.
An unexpected rival
On Monday, KO and Trzecia Droga unexpectedly nominated their candidate for marshal: the current voivode of Małopolska and chairman of the Małopolska PSL structure, Krzysztof Jan Klęczar.
According to regulations, the Voivodeship Assembly must elect a marshal within three months from the date of announcement of the election results, that is, before July 9. If this does not happen, new elections will be necessary.
According to unofficial information, council members around the current Marshal Witold Kozłowski, and more generally Beata Szydło and Andrzej Adamczyk, do not want to vote for the candidate recommended by the PiS authorities. The central authorities of the party announced that consequences would be taken against the “rebels”.
