According to the project, a transition period of 15 years will be introduced (until December 31, 2039), after which an absolute ban on the breeding and breeding of fur animals, with the exception of rabbits, will be introduced.
From January next year there will be a ban on building new fur farms; operations are only allowed on existing farms, without the possibility of expanding them.
A group of MPs from KO, Poland 2050 and the Left submitted a draft amendment to the Animal Protection Act ten days ago. It also involves the introduction of a ban on the breeding and breeding of animals for fur, but from 2029.
High five for animals
The issue of fur farms in Poland has been in the media since September 2020, when one of the portals published the report “The bloody business of fur farms”. Shortly after its publication, the President of Law and Justice Jarosław Kaczyński announced the so-called five for animals, i.e. a draft law that provides, among other things: a ban on the breeding of fur-bearing animals, the use of animals for entertainment and show purposes, and a restriction on ritual slaughter.
However, the project led to protests from farmers. Ultimately, the then government of Mateusz Morawiecki withdrew from further proceedings on the project.
In 2020, there were 810 fur farms operating in Poland, most of which (263 farms) were located in the province. Greater Poland.
