Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia announced that he had sent the draft PiS resolution on the defense of the cross to the Committee on Administration and Home Affairs. Joanna Lichocka (PiS) wanted the project to be discussed during the chamber’s plenary session.
A draft resolution of the chamber, written by PiS MPs, was published on the Sejm website on Tuesday. They wrote in it that “the Sejm of the Republic of Poland calls for respect for the cross.”
It is a symbol not only of faith, but also of universal values, including individual rights, issues of equality, freedom, truth and love of neighbor. In Poland, the cross is also an expression of the preservation of national memory, a symbol of love for the homeland and pride in more than a thousand years of Polish statehood.
– we read in the project.
At the beginning of Wednesday’s Sejm session, PiS MP Joanna Lichocka requested that the draft resolution on the defense of the cross, drawn up by PiS MPs, be discussed in the plenary chamber and not sent back to the committee.
Recalling the content of the project, Lichocka said that “attempts to remove crosses in schools, hospitals, offices and other public institutions in Poland violate our tradition, memory and national pride.”
In recent weeks, such attempts have been made by the Voivode Lublin and the Mayor of Warsaw
– she added.
She ruled that “Poland’s enemies have always fought with the cross.”
You don’t win with the cross, you don’t win with the Poles
– said Lichocka.
In response, Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia said he had sent the draft PiS resolution to the Committee on Administration and Home Affairs.
This decision was positively assessed by the Presidium of the Sejm
– he emphasized.
The topic of the presence of religious symbols in public spaces has recently returned to public debate thanks to the order of the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, in which he introduced standards of equal treatment in the office subordinate to him – the hanging of crosses and civil servants were prohibited from displaying religious symbols on their desks.
In the draft resolution, PiS politicians wrote that “Today the mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, repeats the actions of the communist authorities by banning the presence of the cross in the institutions subordinate to him.”
These actions violate the Polish Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion and derives the foundations of Polish democracy from values whose source is God. No representative of the government or local government bodies has the power to change the provisions of the Constitution. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland calls on the Warsaw authorities to refrain from actions that attack the foundations of the Polish political system.
