Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in Brussels that Poland has agreed to transfer 100 billion euros from NATO to Ukraine. Sikorski takes part in the meeting of the heads of diplomacy of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance’s member states are now “discussing how this support can be institutionalized within NATO.”
We support the NATO Secretary General’s efforts for Ukraine within the North Atlantic Alliance, both in terms of establishing a mission to leverage the Alliance’s staff and training capabilities, and in terms of financial and military support for Ukraine
– said Sikorski, who takes part in the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO countries.
Rutte or the Polish candidate?
The head of Polish diplomacy, taking part in the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO countries, was asked whether Poland supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary General.
We love Marek Rutte, but at the same time we believe that our region is insufficiently represented, both in the Alliance, in the EU and in the UN system. We are looking for candidates for high positions in all three organizations in our region
– said Sikorski.
In addition to Rutte, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, declared his willingness to run for the position of Secretary General of NATO.
“We are discussing how support within NATO can be institutionalized.”
At a press conference ahead of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was asked about his proposal to create a 100 billion euro fund to finance aid to Ukraine. Bloomberg first reported this on Tuesday.
I welcome the Allies’ agreement to maintain and make it more robust. That is why we are now discussing how we can internalize this support within NATO so that it becomes more predictable
said Stoltenberg.
According to him, aid to Ukraine should be less dependent on short-term voluntary aid offers. He added that the sooner we convince Russia that it cannot win this war, the sooner the peace agreement will be signed.
According to reports, NATO’s operational responsibilities include chairing the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), which coordinates arms transfers from about 50 countries to Ukraine.
When asked whether this meant the abolition or inclusion of the Ramstein format in NATO, Stoltenberg replied that activities are coordinated within all existing formats and that NATO countries are part of this format.
The Secretary General said a decision would not be taken at the current ministerial meeting but was expected before the NATO summit in Washington in July.
