“The left is ready for the European Parliament elections in June; we have almost ready lists, we know who will be the boss or chief of staff. I will open our Warsaw list,” said MEP and co-chair of the New Left Robert Biedroń in the PAP Studio. “I hope that Derde Droga will at least receive a yellow card for this in these elections,” he expressed his hope.
The left is ready for the European Parliament elections in June; we have almost ready lists, we know who will be the boss or chief of staff. I’ll open our Warsaw list
– said Robert Biedroń, MEP and co-chair of the New Left, on Friday in the PAP Studio.
Biedroń was asked about the New Left’s preparations for the campaign for the European Parliament.
We are done. We know who will be the boss or chief of staff. We have the lists almost ready. We are also prepared for the European elections because they are just around the corner. The local government campaign ends and the European Parliament campaign automatically begins, and the left is fully prepared for it
– he assured.
When asked about the election slogan, Biedroń replied that it would be announced after the local elections.
The elections for the European Parliament will take place on Sunday 9 June. Biedroń obtained the mandate of Member of the European Parliament in the 2019 elections, running on the lists of the Wiosna party, of which he was president until 2021.
Scores in the coalition
As the left, we have doubts about the chairman (of the Sejm, Szymon) Hołownia, when it comes to blocking the laws on termination of pregnancy for months. (…) I hope that Derde Droga will at least receive a yellow card in these (local) government elections
– said Biedroń on Friday in the PAP Studio.
When asked what the ‘yellow card’ meant in this case, the left-wing politician replied that it meant that ‘we will not save the Third Way, but the woman’.
In these elections we really have to stop thinking in tactical terms, that we have to save a party and that we have to save ourselves, that is to say: save women first of all, and vote for those who are on the side of women to stand.
– he emphasized.
Local authorities will also decide on this. The conscience clause is the best example of this. As a former mayor (of Słupsk) I can say that city presidents often run hospitals and can enforce that the conscience clause is not applied in certain hospitals. It is an extremely controversial thing, it extremely limits women’s rights. And that is why it is important who wins in these elections. We, the left, declare that we will not allow the conscience clause to be applied in hospitals run by the left.
– he declared.
““scorched earth”
Biedroń noted that on the issue of abortion, politicians have been saying the same thing for thirty years and looking for excuses to limit women’s right to decide their lives.
I have heard many ‘such Hołownias’ in the past who said that now we have local elections, and now European elections, and now presidential elections, and this is not the time not to irritate the Church. As if I hear Hołownia in 2023, all these echoes come back to me
– he said.
On March 5, Marshal Hołownia announced that he had decided that bills on abortion would be debated in the Sejm on April 11, just after the first round of local government elections.
However, we live in a political reality and not an ideal one; we are in the middle of a very hot election campaign
– he noted.
He stressed that he has made numerous consultations and mediation efforts in recent weeks to minimize the risk that all abortion bills currently before the Sejm will be rejected in the first reading as part of “this pre-election cannonade.”
That the conventional left will launch the projects of those further to the right, and that those further to the right will launch those further to the left. And we will be left with wasteland, with scorched earth, just because someone thinks it will be easier for him to become mayor, or for his friend to become mayor or councilor.
– noted the marshal.
There are four bills on abortion in the Sejm. In November last year, the left introduced two bills: one partially decriminalizes abortion and its assistance, the other allows termination of pregnancy until the end of the twelfth week of its duration.
End of January this year. A project by a group of MPs from the parliamentary club Civic Coalition was submitted to the Sejm, which assumes that a pregnant woman has the right to health care in the form of termination of pregnancy during the first twelve weeks of its duration.
In addition to these projects, Trzecia Droga (PSL and Polska 2050) submitted a bill to the Sejm at the end of February that “reverses” the Constitutional Court’s 2020 ruling on abortion regulations. TD politicians also want a referendum to be held on abortion.
There are many indications that the new ‘centro-left’, carefully crafted by Donald Tusk, could undergo an internal explosion before the 2025 presidential elections.
