Senator Gloria Calero to replace Josefina Bueno: ‘I couldn’t say no’

The plenary of the Cortes this Wednesday announced Gloria Calero, former Government delegate, as the new regional senator representing the Valencian Community, with a total of 45 votes in favour, 46 blank and two blank. “I couldn’t say no,” he admitted after receiving the appointment document.

Calero (PSPV) stepped down as delegate, to be assumed by Valencia’s socialist councilor Pilar Bernabé, and occupied the seat in the Senate of Josefina Bueno, recently appointed Minister for Innovation and Universities. His nomination includes Josep Tur, a former mayor of Vall d’Uixó (Castellón), in his place. In this way, the state of Alicante loses its voice in the Upper House. He took office with three socialist senators, especially Ana Martínez, José Asensi and Bueno himself. From the moment it was learned that Bueno would join the Government headed by Puig, the local director of Alicante’s PSPV-PSOE,Try to occupy this position by a representative from AlicanteHowever, what has been seen, this assertion, which was made publicly to the PSPV-PSOE National Director headed by Puig, was to no avail. Now, the state’s representation in the Senate rises from six to five seats: two in the hands of the PP—Adela Pedrosa and Pablo Ruz—one unassigned—Emilio Argüeso—and the two named socialists.

Voting was conducted secretly by ballot paper and with the assistance of Calero on the hemicycle, as required by law. Five lawmakers voted electronically, including Papi Robles, a member of Comprom’s board of trustees, and Aitana Mas, deputy spokesperson for the coalition and new vice president of Generalitat.

A nurse by profession, the former delegate was a councilor and mayor in Sagunt (Valencia) and was a federal executive member of the PSOE. Speaking to the media at Les Corts, Demonstrated “honor and pride” and thanked the party for “always” recommending him for responsible positions and being “very interesting”.

Calero predicts that the new phase will prosper after two “very difficult” years with “never seen situations” as delegates in tackling the pandemic and crisis. “I’ve had a lot of loneliness, a lot of nerves, a lot of uncertainty and anxiety, but also a lot of satisfaction, and that’s what I take with me,” she said.

As a senator, he promised to continue to defend the “great” socialist project and provide “a lot of coordination” with the Generalitat to transfer the Valencians’ defense policies to the Upper House.

patience and common sense

In addition, he advised Bernabé “a great deal of common sense and patience” as the new delegate, but relied on him for his long career in politics: “He knows what he has to do.”

This special plenary session by the Cortes for the senator’s proclamation before a regular session began with a minute of silence for the deaths at the Melilla fence last Friday.
