We cannot assume that people are smart enough to elect parliamentarians but too stupid to decide in a referendum whether and when abortion is allowed, Szymon Hołownia, chairman of the Poznań Sejm, said on Saturday. He also threatened that President Andrzej Duda cannot veto bills resulting from the referendum. “We have analyzes from our legal office on this issue,” the leader of Poland 2050 said, adding that he would defend the decision to let the Sejm handle the issue. abortion laws on April 11. This decision was recently the cause of a dispute within the December 13 Coalition. The left accused him of moving projects “to the legal freezer.”
During an election meeting in Poznań with Third Way voters, Hołownia emphasized that the solution to the problem with the abortion law currently in force in Poland was promised in twelve Third Way guarantees. He added that from early March he would defend his decision to push ahead with abortion laws in the Sejm on April 11, immediately after the first round of local elections.
We promised to solve the problem of the inhumane abortion law in force in Poland today and we are implementing exactly what we agreed with our voters: the law and the call for a referendum.
– said the marshal. He explained why it was necessary to organize a referendum on abortion, saying it was an issue on which Poles should be able to express their views.
Why should we think people are wise enough to elect Paulina Hennig-Kloska, me, MP (Marek) Suski and MP (Antoni) Macierewicz as MPs, but they are too stupid to decide on anything specific. So they are smart enough to give us parliamentary mandates, but too stupid to answer the question of whether it is allowed to terminate a pregnancy and when it is allowed to terminate a pregnancy.
– said the chairman of the Sejm.
Szymon Hołownia recalled that the idea of a referendum on this issue is not new.
We are being criticized for the idea of a referendum for which the left collected signatures in 2016. We conducted a search of the Sejm transcripts. I have a file of statements by MPs from the left who called for a referendum in 1996, 1997 and later in 2016. What changed? If we want to change the inhumane law that seeks to force women into heroism today, we must hold a referendum
– Hołownia added.
Presidential veto
Referring to the statement of President Andrzej Duda, who announced that he would veto laws that liberalize the approach to abortion, he said that the president cannot veto laws that are the result of a referendum.
We have analyzes from our law firm about this
– said the leader of Poland 2050, trying to put pressure on the president.
He encouraged critics of the decision to postpone consideration of bills on abortion in the Sejm until April 11 to be patient.
On April 11, you’ll see if it was worth waiting until there was at least a little less emotion and a little more conversation about what these bills are actually about. I believe this is such an important issue that you can’t make a mistake here, that you really have to think carefully about every vote you cast and every word you say. Because it is not about us, the politicians. This is about those women who find themselves in a dramatic situation today, and the state is against them, not for them
– said the chairman of the Sejm.
Does Hołownia want to please the left again by recalling their demands for a referendum on abortion? Or maybe he wants to confuse someone by explaining that “it’s worth waiting”?
The leader of Poland 2050 assured that the governing coalition had analyzes from the Legal Bureau, but was it equally willing to prepare legal analyzes on the draft laws themselves? The deputy chairman of the Sejm, Krzysztof Bosak, was the only one to make the request. The Confederation politician reported in early March that he asked during one of the Sejm presidencies whether the Speaker of the House or the presidium members had sought legal opinions on bills related to abortion. According to him, “nobody ordered anything.” He also said at the time: “I was the only member of the Presidium who applied to the Sejm Analyzes Bureau for legal advice on, for example, the compliance of these projects with the Constitution.”.
