The Sejm of the 10th term is 70 percent Men’s. Poles elected a Sejm much more conservative than themselves, Sejm Marshal Szymon Hołownia told Polityka, referring to abortion laws.
“Polityka” asked Hołownia about postponing the processing of abortion laws until April 11.
I took this decision so that – as President Kwaśniewski rightly put it – parliamentarians could think about this very important issue when voting, and not just about opinion polls and ‘electorates’.
– he said.
He emphasized that “he clearly hears the voices of those who accuse him of blocking something.”
But imagine what voices we would hear today as a coalition and what demonstrations we would hold in the streets if it was already clear that it was over, that it was over, that there would be no change in the law in this Sejm in in In this area all projects were already in the trash.
– he said.
When asked why he thought they would not reach him in four weeks, he replied:
Because the decision not to simply take on these important projects, but to give the parties clearly defined time to prepare for this important conversation, has created a new political reality.
Hołownia electorate
When asked whether he was concerned that the decision to postpone work on these projects would turn some voters away from his party, he replied:
NO. During the election campaign we openly expressed the Third Way’s position on abortion legislation. (…) Anyone who disagreed with our approach to this issue could and probably did vote for KO and Left.
He emphasized that he “wants to give a voice in this issue to millions of Polish women who today do not have the right to decide their fate, while Mr. Macierewicz, Kaczyński and Suski do.”
The Sejm of the 10th term is 70 percent Men’s. Poles elected a Sejm that was much more conservative than themselves. Someone recently shouted at me: I know we won’t change the law in this Sejm, but if you vote on it, at least it will be clear who is who! So that’s it? To mark enemies for a new political war? Is it to stand on your head and help women forced into heroism by a cowardly state, here and now?
– said the Chairman of the Sejm.
