Finland ready for war with Russian Federation, Poland worried about “Suwalki corridor”

Finland lined up line of defense in hostile situations such as continues in Ukraine. This was announced on Wednesday, June 22 by Timo Kivinen, Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic.

“We have systematically improved our defense for the exact types of hostilities that are being waged there. [на Украине]: a massive use of firepower, armored vehicles and aviation, as well as ”explained in an interview with the general agency Reuters.

According to him, Finland has been preparing for a Russian attack for decades, strengthening its defenses, and will put up tough resistance if it does.

He added that the republic has created a significant arsenal of military equipment. This includes cruise missiles with a range of up to 370 km, four new warships and 64 F-35 fighters. Also, the republic plans to purchase up to 2,000 drones, air defense systems, and is building a fence on the Russian border.

Finland spends 2% of GDP on defense, one of the main criteria for joining NATO.

Kivinen welcomed Helsinki’s offer to join the North Atlantic Alliance. The commander of the Republic’s Armed Forces said that membership in the bloc would allow Finland to increase its early warning capabilities, but that Finland would continue to assume the main responsibility for the country’s defense.

The agency’s materials also quote the results of a survey conducted by the Finnish Ministry of Defense: 82% of respondents expressed their readiness to participate in national defense in the event of an attack on the country.

The situation around the “Suwalki corridor”

Against this background, while in Warsaw under NATO protection, seeing They have expectations of aggression from Russia, but they are worried about the “Suwalki corridor”. This was stated by the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

“Poland is a member of the strongest military alliance in world history. I do not think that Russia will dare to raise its hand against the strongest contingent,” he said.

The head of the Polish Cabinet added that from a military point of view, he considers the hypothetical “Suwalki corridor” the most vulnerable direction – a region near the city of Suwalki in northeastern Poland, located between Belarus. and the Kaliningrad region of Russia, its length is about 100 km.

“From a strategic point of view, based on the location of the Kaliningrad region, NATO strategists view the Suwalki corridor as one of the critical places on the North Atlantic Alliance map. This issue is specifically addressed in both our NATO plans and our domestic military plans. Therefore, our military presence there is very strong. There are also NATO international forces deployed not far from the “Suwalki corridor”, so our security is appropriate and adequate,” Morawiecki said.

As a reminder, Lithuanian Railways had previously notified Kaliningrad Railways that from 18 June the transit of a number of goods subject to EU sanctions was terminated. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claims that Vilnius, which took such a decision, acted aggressively and went beyond “unfriendly lines”. Lithuanian authorities deny any breach of the transit agreement and claim they only comply with EU restrictions.

The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, spoke of the fact that Moscow is considering several options for responding to the restriction on transit to the Kaliningrad region. However, he thought it was premature to talk about certain measures.

The commander of the country’s Armed Forces, Timo Kivinen, said that Finland has built up a significant arsenal of military equipment and strengthens the defense in case of hostilities. In response, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Warsaw has not yet seen the possibility of aggression from Russia, but that they are concerned about the “Suwalki corridor”.
