“It’s a shame for us and our people” Tbilisi accuses Kiev of blocking Georgia’s EU membership

David Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People faction, traveled to Washington and Brussels, where he allegedly tried to take Georgia. did not provide Candidate status for EU membership. On Wednesday, June 22, Prime Minister of the Republic Irakli Garibashvili made a statement in the Georgian Parliament.

“One of the main initiators who told Europe and the United States that Georgia should not receive candidate status was Mr. Arakhamia, the representative of the Ukrainian authorities.

“He practically gave an ultimatum to Europe that they would be very upset if Georgia got candidate status,” said Garibashvili.

He also accused the Georgian opposition of allegedly going to Brussels and demanded that Tbilisi not be granted EU candidate status. Among them, the Georgian Cabinet head mentioned Salome Samadashvili, Georgia’s former ambassador to the EU, and a deputy from the Lelo for Georgia party.

According to Garibashvili of the Associated Trio (Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine – socialbites.ca), his country most deserved EU candidate status.

“Unfortunately, we did not receive it. This is an insult to us and our people,” he said.

On 17 June, the European Commission recommended that the EU summit grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, as well as recognize the European perspective of Georgia and grant candidate status after meeting a set of conditions. EU leaders meeting to be held in Brussels on 23-24 June, reminded TASS.

What Arakhamiya said

In a radio interview “Voice of America” (the organization is included in the list of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice) Arakhamia said that she did indeed go to the United States to convey to the American side evidence that Tbilisi violated the sanctions regime against the Russian Federation.

Also, in his open letter to the leaders of Arakhamia, EU and USA, he underlined the need to impose sanctions on the former Prime Minister of Georgia, the “pro-Russian oligarch” Bidzina Ivanishvili.

However, it remains unclear exactly how trips to the United States relate to the issue of a country’s accession to the European Union.

The head of the People’s Servant group described today’s statements by the current Georgian prime minister as “completely fake”.

Arahamia was not in Europe, this is a first. And in the United States, he argued that Mr. Ivanishvili is a pro-Russian oligarch with a puppet government, framing ordinary Georgian people who actually want to go to Europe. And the recent large-scale rally has made it clear that Georgians are part of Europe, that everyone wants to be part of the EU.

We as Ukraine, as officials in Ukraine, will help Georgia become a member of the European Union as much as possible.

And do not pay attention to the honest stuffing and frauds of the Georgian government, especially the Prime Minister, ”Arakhamia concluded.

Irakli Garibashvili said at the end of February that he does not plan to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation. Special operations in Ukraineexplains this in line with the national interests. In early March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had recalled the Georgian ambassador for “Tbilisi’s immoral stance on sanctions” and for blocking the sending of Georgian volunteers to Ukraine. After that, Kyiv repeatedly accused Georgia of not complying with the sanctions regime and establishing relations with Russia in order to circumvent restrictions.

Ukraine and Georgia’s path to the EU

Already in the early 1990s, the Ukrainian leadership declared that it considered European integration to be a priority aspect of the country’s foreign policy. Already in the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of July 2, 1993 “On the main directions of the domestic and foreign policy of Ukraine”, the priority of the European vector and the desire to enter the EU were confirmed.

Ukraine has been a member of the EU Eastern Partnership program since 2009. In 2014, Ukraine and the EU signed an Association Agreement, replacing the previous Association and Cooperation Agreement between the European Communities and Ukraine.

In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada legally determined the path of joining the European Union in the Constitution of Ukraine.

Kyiv formally applied for EU membership on February 28, 2022. On 1 March, the European Parliament recommended that Ukraine be granted EU candidate state status.

In response, Georgia filed a relevant application on 3 March. Country officials had previously signed an association agreement with the EU. Tbilisi participates in programs such as European Neighborhood Policy and Eurocontrol and has a visa-free regime with the European Union since 28 March 2017.

The head of the Georgian government, Irakli Garibashvili, claims that David Arakhamia, the head of the Servant of the People group, demanded that Tbilisi not receive EU candidate status. The Ukrainian politician denied these accusations, saying that Kiev would help Georgia become as part of the European Union as possible. Read more in the article “socialbites.ca”.
