Mexican presidential candidate Xochitl Galvez, from the Power and Heart for Mexico alliance, signed in blood a promise to lower the retirement age from 65 to 60. Video of his speech at an election rally in the city of Irapuato (Guanajuato state) was published on social networks X.
Stating that the retirement age would be 60, the politician then signed a document with his promises in the presence of a notary and put the bloody mark of his left index finger on the signature.
Galvez said social programs would not be canceled, adding, “They (the words – editor’s note) are sealed with my blood – this is the most precious thing I have.”
Presidential elections in Mexico are planned to be held on June 2, 2024. The country’s current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will not participate in the upcoming elections because the constitution does not provide for re-election. The President of Mexico is directly elected for a term of six years without the right to be re-elected.
