The truth is obvious: Putin is a war criminal, and the only reason for the war is Russian aggression against Ukraine. There is no room for neutrality or symmetry here, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after the meeting of heads of government of the Visegrad Group. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had a very different opinion on this.
Visitors from the V4 countries, who spoke in Prague on Tuesday, were asked during the press conference after the meeting whether we would ‘rather talk about V2 plus V2’ in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Has it been possible to determine who is the aggressor in this war?
– was the question about the conclusions of the meeting.
No matter how strong Russia remains as a country, the political, moral and historical assessment of what is happening in Ukraine today must be unequivocal. In matters such as the assessment of who is guilty of the war, who is the aggressor, who is the victim, what is the cause of the war – this is no room for negotiation.
– replied Tusk.
As he said: “You can negotiate the terms of peace, you can think about methods of action, how to help Ukraine, which wants just as much, who can do just as much, but there is not even the slightest room for speculation about who wants it. is guilty and who is not of this aggression.”
Ukraine is fighting for its independence and the right to an independent existence. It is simple and so obvious that no words are worth commenting on it
– Tusk emphasized.
As he said: “If we had adopted Moscow’s position, or the position currently presented by Putin, neither Slovakia, nor the Czech Republic, nor Hungary, nor Poland would be independent countries and we would still be living in slavery. ”
Therefore, we have no right to condemn our neighbors to this sad fate
– Added Tusk.
I hope that after today’s meeting we will find ways to persuade each other in a way that will benefit the whole Four, Europe and Ukraine.
– said the head of the Polish government.
Orbán’s position
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasized that we must first discuss how to end the war.
Some people see this conflict through Ukrainian glasses, and Hungary sees through Hungarian glasses
– he pointed out. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, “We must save as many lives as possible and end this war.”
Whoever is the aggressor is the aggressor, whoever is the victim is the victim, Tusk is here. But the question for us is how the war will end
– said Orbán.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico reiterated that his government will not provide armed aid or military equipment to Ukraine.
When it comes to commercial and trade support, we see no obstacles
– added.
The head of the Czech government, Petr Fiala, noted that “we do not hide the fact that there are significant differences between us.” As he admitted, the V4 is different than before Russian aggression, and when it comes to perceiving the causes of Russian aggression and seeking a solution to this crisis, “the differences are very large.”
There is no doubt that the situation in the V4 has become polarized under the influence of Russian aggression, but today’s meeting shows that it makes sense to talk, listen to what partners say and find points of contact.
Fiala concluded.
