Adam Michnik was willing to reach an agreement with the communists, but he was unable to do so with the right wing. ‘Half Bodnar, half Ziobro. Well no, such an agreement or reconciliation cannot of course exist,” he said on neo-TVP Info in the program “Assymetrical Conversations”. Michnik believes that Jaruzelski was a greater democrat than Jarosław Kaczyński and President Andrzej Duda. The “rules of a democratic state” understood in this way could herald the violent takeover of several institutions that do not fit the political model of the new government.
In Saturday’s “Assymetrical Conversations” program, hosted by Dorota Wysocka-Schnepf of “GW,” Adam Michnik compared Law and Justice to a virus that “can catch its breath and explode in a certain cultural and social constellation.” As he said, it was only thanks to the “uprising” and the “spirit of freedom” that a change of power took place in Poland.
It is never the end, because, as Albert Camus wrote in “The Plague”, this virus, the bacillus, can hide, but it does not die, it always exists. It’s hidden under the floor, in underwear, in trash cans, but it exists. And in a certain cultural and social constellation it can breathe and explode again
– said the editor-in-chief of “GW”. His words may indicate a desire to stigmatize those who support PiS and disagree with him and the current ruling camp.

Democracy! But as we understand it
In the current situation, the demiurge of the Third Polish Republic and defender of the Magdalene Agreement does not see any possibility of building an agreement with the United Right. According to Michnik, it cannot be an equal political force in Poland next to the PO, the left or other groups from the opposite political scene. An agreement on this basis is not possible today for the Tusk camp.
If this means some kind of agreement, with Macierewicz or Kaczyński or with those others, I don’t know if that would be halfway, right? Half Bodnar, half Ziobro. Well no, such an agreement or reconciliation cannot of course exist. Any agreement is only possible if the rules of a democratic constitutional state are unanimously accepted. And here it must be admitted that there is a fundamental difference between Kaczyński and Jaruzelski. Jaruzelski said in 1989 that I recognize the new rules of the game. As president he recognized them, while Duda does not
– said Michnik on neo-TVP Info. Isn’t comparing PiS to a ‘virus hidden in garbage cans’ and the complete exclusion of equal dialogue a sign of strong solutions?
Michnik and company have always been the standards of a democratic state. For the rest there were services, searches and now free courts
– responded journalist Wiktor Świetlik on the X platform.
Michnik prefers Jaruzelski
Michnik also commented sarcastically on Jarosław Kaczyński, saying that “he is not an expert on his brain.”
I have always appreciated Jarosław Kaczyński for his intelligence, so I just don’t understand some things. He does not understand what happened there, that he suddenly says things completely detached from reality. He talks nonsense and obvious idiocy. He doesn’t understand it because it’s not like him. He was not a fanatic, he was a coolly calculating man, Macierewicz was a fanatic
– said Adam Michnik, who has a completely different opinion about Jaruzelski. He admitted that Kaczyński was better and that his dictatorship was not “complete” like that of Jaruzelski, who put him in prison, but Jaruzelski was a greater democrat.
And here it must be admitted that there is a fundamental difference between Kaczyński and Jaruzelski. Jaruzelski said in 1989 that I recognize the new rules of the game. As president he recognized them, while Duda does not
In the recordings revealed in 2021, Michnik calls Jaruzelski a “Polish patriot” and says he “loves him” and hugs him profusely. The editor-in-chief of “Gazeta Wyborcza” has now returned to neo-TVP after many years. Previously he was a frequent guest in Tomasz Lis’ program.
