The Szczecin Regional Prosecutor’s Office has withdrawn the request to lift the immunity of the Senator of the Civic Coalition and former Senate President Tomasz Grodzki! This concerns an investigation into corruption at the Transplantation Aid Foundation. The decision was made by the new management of the Szczecin Prosecutor’s Office.
The motion on Grodzki’s immunity was withdrawn
According to the Szczecin Regional Prosecutor’s Office, after analyzing the application, “significant inconsistencies were found between the statements contained therein and the statements of the indictment in the case against Krzysztof K. and others.” According to investigators, witness statements also rule out the possibility of filing charges against the senator.
The new management of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin also stated that the request contained formal errors, which prevented it from being classified as a procedural document.
The Grodzki case
In October 2023, the National Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had received a request from the Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin to waive Grodzki’s immunity. The Szczecin prosecutor’s office wanted to indict the then Senate President for fraud against patients, bribery and money laundering.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the charges in the request for waiver of immunity relate to the commission of crimes in the period 2008-2019, consisting of extorting money from patients for operations carried out within the public healthcare system. The prosecutor’s findings show that Grodzki allegedly incited other people to commit crimes, including: doctors who had already heard charges in the case and ordered them to commit these crimes.
This was not the first request from the public prosecutor’s office to waive Tomasz Grodzki’s immunity. In March 2021, Szczecin’s prosecutor’s office asked for his immunity to be waived and sent a request to the Senate in this regard. The Prosecutor’s Office subsequently stated that Grodzki would be charged with four counts of receiving financial benefits during the period when he was director of a specialized hospital in Szczecin and head of the local Department of Thoracic Surgery.
However, the Senate left this motion out of consideration because it had not been corrected, as previously requested by the Senate. As a result, the prosecutor’s office repeated this request. However, in May 2022, the Senate did not agree to hold Grodzki criminally liable.
Grodzki has repeatedly assured that the corruption allegations against him are unfounded.
I have never made any operation dependent on the payment of bribes to me
– said Grodzki in December 2019, when the first reports on this topic appeared on Radio Szczecin.
