Former German diplomat Helmut Hoffmann said that the West is deliberately ignoring Russia’s “red lines” towards Ukraine in 2021. He talked about this in an interview with a German publication. Berliner Zeitung.

According to him, Moscow could accept NATO’s eastward expansion, but he made it clear that Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance was unacceptable and was a “red line”.

“When Putin said he would absolutely prevent an ‘anti-Russian sentiment’ with Western support from appearing on his doorstep in 2021, this went unnoticed or deliberately ignored,” Hoffman said.

In the interview, he also reminded the words of the former US Ambassador to the Soviet Union, George Kennan, that ignoring Russia’s role in the European security architecture is fraught with dangerous consequences.

This week Vladimir Putin statedHe said that the reason for the launch of a special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine was Kiev’s refusal to implement the Minsk agreements.

Before that, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko named The Minsk agreements are “a very intelligently written document.” He said that he “needs these agreements” for “at least 4.5 years” to “form the Ukrainian armed forces, build the Ukrainian economy and train the Ukrainian army together with NATO to create the best armed forces in Eastern Europe.”

Previously Lavrov ruled out the possibility of new “goodwill gestures” towards the West.
