We are in the final stages of preparing the joint Third Way project on abortion; We are still a few days away from completing the work – the president of the PSL-TD club, Krzysztof Paszyk, told PAP. “We are also working on a resolution on holding a referendum on this issue,” added the head of the Polska 2050-TD club, Mirosław Suchoń.
The Third Way wants to restore the so-called compromise on abortion
At the end of January, PSL MP Marek Sawicki announced that the People’s Party plans to submit a project on abortion together with Poland 2050. He emphasized that the most appropriate solution would be to restore the so-called abortion compromise of 1993, and then call a referendum.

PAP asked the president of the PSL-Trzecia Droga club, Krzysztof Paszyk, about the fate of this project.
Ongoing work. We are in the final stages of preparations. I think we are still a few days away from finishing this project
– said the head of the People’s Club.
The politician also pointed out that issues related to abortion were not included in the coalition agreement signed in November last year by the leaders of the Civic Coalition, Third Way and New Left.
For this reason, if we want to present our solutions in this matter, we can only follow the parliamentary route
– he explained.
That is why there are already several parliamentary projects on abortion at the moment and we are considering, together with Poland 2050 as part of the Third Way, to submit our own parliamentary project on – despite everything – liberalization, i.e. changing the situation with which we are dealing with today. after the verdict of the Constitutional Court by Julia Przyłębska
– he said.
Some people are trying to hold us accountable for the fact that we were supposed to present our project a week ago, but we’re not doing anything rash. Abortion is too serious a matter, so we work patiently and quietly. We will present a good project, which will be the only one that will have a chance of being adopted during this term of the Sejm, and that also has a chance of being signed by President Andrzej Duda.
– he emphasized.
When asked about the project’s assumptions, the politician admitted that “for those who strongly expect the liberalization of abortion laws, this may not be three steps forward.”
But it will be one that can actually be done during this term of the Sejm and under the current president
– assured Paszyk.
Resolution on holding a referendum
In turn, the president of the Polska 2050-TD club, Mirosław Suchoń, emphasized in an interview with PAP:
As we promised during the election campaign, this will be a rescue bill. We are working to make this a broader package for women’s safety in this regard.
The politician also announced that a resolution on holding a referendum on abortion is being worked on.
Liberalization of regulations in the projects of KO and Links
At the end of January, the Sejm received a bill from a group of deputies of the Civic Coalition parliamentary club on abortion, which assumes that a pregnant person has the right to health care in the form of termination of pregnancy during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. its duration.
In November, the left submitted two projects on liberalizing abortion regulations. One of them partially decriminalizes abortion and its assistance, the other allows termination of pregnancy until the end of the twelfth week of its duration.
Extraordinary committee?
The chairwoman of the Left Club, Anna Maria Żukowska, announced at the end of January that she would ask the president of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, to set up an extraordinary committee to review draft laws on abortion.
Because one is within the scope of the Criminal Code, the other is within the scope of the Family Planning Law, and we do not know what the Third Way proposal will be.
– Żukowska noticed.
Marshal Hołownia believed that Żukowska’s proposal to create an extraordinary committee to consider abortion projects from different groups could be a good idea.
This solution was positively received at the Seniors Convention
– he told journalists in the Sejm.
Judgment of the Constitutional Court from 2020
Anti-abortion rules in force in Poland since 1993 were amended following the October 2020 Constitutional Court ruling. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions for the Permissibility of Termination of Pregnancy, known as the Abortion Compromise , also allowed abortion in the case of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable disease threatening his life. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled that this ground for termination of pregnancy was unconstitutional, sparking a wave of protests across the country. This provision expired with the publication of the Constitutional Court ruling in January 2021.
