MEP Ryszard Legutko, on behalf of the Law and Justice delegation in the European Parliament, has submitted an interpellation to the European Commission in connection with the recording published on website Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.
The recording, according to PiS, suggested “Polish participation in the crime of genocide, omitting the participation of Germans.”
On January 27, the website appears During their statements, captions were shown with the victims’ dates of birth, as well as the dates and places of death, but the recording repeatedly contained the misleading statement: “Auschwitz camp, Poland”, suggesting that Poland had something to do with concentration camps.
– we read in the interpellation.
The head of the EKR group asked the EC “why it is once again consciously and deliberately misleading public opinion and trying to falsify historical facts by taking responsibility for the crime of genocide away from the real perpetrators – the Germans.” Furthermore, Legutko asks about the actions the EC plans to take “to prevent such hypocrisy in the future, and whether the Commission President plans to officially apologize to Poland.”
Scandalous European Championship recording
On Saturday, the EC website published a recording about International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which was celebrated on January 27. In the recording, individual commissioners recall the names of selected Holocaust victims from different parts of Europe, including their names and places of death. The victims listed also included those who were murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, established by the occupying German authorities in Oświęcim, Lesser Poland.
In the recording, the places of death of the victims were shown with the name of the city where the person died and the country in which the city is currently located; therefore, the subtitles displayed in the recording may read, among other things, “Auschwitz Camp, Poland.” Likewise, other camps that existed in Europe at the time were presented in the same formula, for example “Camp Mauthausen, Austria” or “Camp Jasenovac, Croatia”.
The use of the inaccurate phrase ‘Auschwitz, Poland’ was highlighted on social media. On website
In his English-language submission, Siewiera addressed European Commission President Von der Leyen, emphasizing that “during World War II, German concentration camps were established in several European countries under German occupation.”
At a time when the tide of anti-Semitism is rising, we must remember the victims and the roots of evil to prevent it from happening again.
– added.
For his part, Mularczyk said in his contribution that “it is becoming clear that the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs must continue its efforts to educate about the Second World War.” He said that during commemorations such as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, “it is still visible that false stories are circulating around the world.”
To be clear, none of the concentration camps were Polish; all concentration camps were built in German-occupied areas; the Nazis were Germans and should be called “German Nazis”; Auschwitz was founded in German-occupied Poland; we must remember all the victims who suffered at the hands of the Germans
– He wrote.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also commented on the controversy aroused by the signatures presented in the recording, also on the website Radosław Sikorski.
When writing about the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz, it should be noted that it was built under German occupation. Information on the European Commission’s social media will be clarified, but it is a pity that the Polish EU Commissioner did not present the Polish position in advance
– he announced.
The fact that Auschwitz was a German death camp is a fact, not someone’s point of view. @radeksikorski’s reaction to the scandalous film The European Commission led by @vonderleyen is just a confirmation that the head of @MSZ_RP is damaging the interests of Poland in his current activities and this perception of his activities is indeed: POLISH POINT OF VIEW
– responded to Sikorski’s submission Szymon Szynkowski, also known as SękPiS MP, former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Improvement of the Commission’s material
A corrected recording was published on the profile of the head of the EC on Sunday, stating that Auschwitz was a German Nazi death camp.
The Germans established the Auschwitz camp in 1940 to imprison Poles. Two years later, Auschwitz II-Birkenau was founded. It became the place of the extermination of the Jews. There was also a network of subcamps within the camp complex. In Auschwitz the Germans murdered at least 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities.
On January 27, 1945, soldiers of the Red Army opened the gates of the camp. Extremely exhausted prisoners, of whom there were about 7,000 left. – including half a thousand children – welcomed them as liberators.
January 27 is celebrated around the world as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Ceremonies commemorating the victims of the Holocaust were held at the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum on Saturday.
