In the European Commission’s recording of Holocaust Remembrance Day, published on the X platform, EU commissioners appear with maps on which the names of Holocaust victims and the places where they died are written. At one point you see the words “Auschwitz camp” with the caption “Poland” – there is no mention that Poland was occupied by Germany at the time. “Unfortunately, this is a fairly well-known practice. There is a tendency in the Western world not to use the words ‘Germany’ or ‘German’,” says Prof. in an interview with wPolityce.pl. Ryszard Legutko, PiS Member of the European Parliament.
Prof. Ryszard Legutko reminds us of the situation that took place in the European Parliament during the ceremony commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
On the anniversary of the ghetto uprising, President Roberta Metsola gave a speech at the ceremony in the European Parliament in which she did not use the word “Germany” once. When I pointed this out to her, she was surprised and said, “What, I was talking about Nazis.” In the EU, this practice is so entrenched that the words ‘Germany’ and ‘German’ will not even cross their lips in such a context. The EC is no different from other institutions here, especially because Germany is very important in the EU and the president of the EC is German.
– say.
It will never occur to anyone that Poland did not actually exist at that time. This can of course be explained by the ignorance of these people, but the main problem is the formatting I was talking about. They behave like Pavlov’s dog: when they hear the Holocaust or the Second World War, they immediately associate it with Nazis, not with Germans.
– he adds.
“These are people without any sense of patriotism.”
Will the Polish government respond in any way to the scandalous EC recording?
Probably not, because why would they respond? They have taken on the role of a helpful junior partner who listens to all the EU’s orders so they don’t mess around. Moreover, they were taken by surprise, because the fight against these false statements was the agenda of the previous government, and they are not doing anything that could in any way be linked to PiS policies.
– say.
Besides, when I observe Donald Tusk, Radosław Sikorski, etc., they just don’t care, it’s a secondary issue. These are people without any sense of patriotism or historical identity. If it were otherwise, they would not pursue such anti-sovereignty policies
– he says.
