The actions of the Parliamentary Investigative Committee on Pegasus will not affect the systems used by the Polish services, the head of this committee, Magdalena Sroka (PSL-TD), assured PAP. According to her, during the eavesdropping scandal there was abuse regarding obtaining permission to use Pegasus.
The day before yesterday, the Sejm appointed members of the investigative committee for operational and reconnaissance activities with the help of Pegasus. Magdalena Sroka (PSL-TD) was elected head of the committee. The deputy heads of the committee were: Marcin Bosacki (KO), Paweł Śliz (Poland 2050-TD), Tomasz Trela (Left Wing), Przemysław Wipler (Confederation).
Who is on the committee?
The head of the investigative committee confirmed in an interview with PAP that among the first witnesses called before the committee will be Mariusz Kamiński, Maciej Wąsik and Jarosław Kaczyński.
Someone must have come up with the idea to purchase and use an Israeli system. We don’t know if Kaczyński told Kamiński about Pegasus or the other way around. However, I assume it was Kamiński who persuaded Kaczyński to do so
– she said.
She stressed that these are just speculations at this stage.

Sroka announced that the list of witnesses would also include people who made decisions in this case, namely former Prime Ministers Beata Szydło and Mateusz Morawiecki.
The committee’s work may take several months.
I believe that as we work we will discover aspects of this case that have not yet seen the light of day. Perhaps at some point we will be able to gather evidence that will allow the Public Prosecution Service to initiate proceedings
– she said.
Before Magdalena Sroka started her political career, she served in the police force for sixteen years and reached the rank of chief commissioner. When asked whether Pegasus and similar systems should be used by Polish services at all, she answered in the affirmative.
When I worked in criminal investigation, I used operational control myself, so I know how important this tool is for officers
– she said.
Judges misled?
Therefore, Sroka assured that the commission’s actions will not affect the systems used by the Polish services.
However, we must not forget that such tools must first of all be certified, and secondly, be secure enough so that the information obtained thanks to them does not flow outside, and certainly not outside our country. In the case of Pegasus, all data obtained from it was automatically sent to servers in Israel
– she explained.
Sroka also noted that during the wiretapping scandal, there was abuse regarding obtaining permission to use Pegasus.
The judges who signed these requests are already saying they were misled. They were not aware that they were agreeing to the use of such a highly invasive operational control, which, for example, lasted significantly longer than the three-month period they approved
– she said.
She added that Pegasus made it possible to download years-old data from an infected device.
The Pegasus Commission of Inquiry must investigate the legality, accuracy and targeting of operational and reconnaissance activities undertaken using this software, including: by the government, secret services and police in the period from November 16, 2015 to November 20, 2023.
The committee must also determine who was responsible for purchasing Pegasus and similar tools for the Polish authorities. It will also be investigated whether the operational and reconnaissance activities carried out with Pegasus against Polish citizens were legal, correct and intentional.
After the committee members’ impatient announcements about their willingness to question the president of PiS or Mariusz Kamiński, it is clear that this whole spectacle should be some kind of vendetta.
