The head of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, presented a proposal to abandon direct elections of the mayor of Ulan-Ude and submitted a bill on this to the People’s Khural (parliament) of the republic. TASS.
The bill submitted by Tsydenov includes a provision that the mayor of Ulan-Ude will be elected not directly, but by the representative body of the municipality from among candidates submitted by the competition commission.
Tsydenov’s proposal will be considered at the next session of the People’s Khural of Buryatia on February 29.
Chairman of the Ulan-Ude City Council Chimit Balzhinimaev called Tsydenov’s initiative “really long overdue” and appealed to work and not get carried away by politics. In his opinion, in the current difficult situation, this is not the time to be distracted by resource-intensive tasks such as the popular mayoral election. Balzhinimaev noted that today the competitive format for electing the mayor is the most economical and at the same time no less effective.
