Instead of paying reparations, help rebuild the Saxon palace – such a proposal was made in “Newsweek” by the German historian Peter Oliver Loem. Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz considered this vote “important”. “Accepting such a ‘payment’ from Germany (…) should be treated as high treason,” replied former minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk.
On Friday, Sienkiewicz suggested that the issue of the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace would soon become famous and advised to wait for further information.
This information came quickly. Sienkiewicz, with the help of the Extraordinary Meeting of Shareholders of Pałac Saski, dismissed the entire three-member board of directors, namely president Jan Edmund Kowalski, vice president for finance Robert Cicirko and board member Robert Bernisz. Their place was taken by a one-man board, President Jan Zajączkowski.

Today the issue of rebuilding the Saxon Palace continues. German historian Peter Oliver Loem said in an interview he gave to “Newsweek” that a “noticeable gesture” (implicit for Poland) would be Germany’s willingness to help rebuild the Saxon Palace.
Germany would have to respond to Polish expectations, including materially. Of course, no one is talking about paying trillions, but it should be a notable gesture. This could be, for example, the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace – he said in ‘Newsweek’.
Mularczyk against Sienkiewicz for ‘high treason’
Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who was responsible for the case of reparations to Poland from Germany, commented sharply on the issue.
The German offer to participate in the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace has been suggested by German diplomats for years. Accepting such a “payment” from Germany instead of paying reparations estimated at $1.5 trillion in the Report on War Loss should be treated as high treason.

Mularczyk also responded to the arrival of legal advisor Janusz Piotr Kolczyński, who recalled that the compensation case “will not end”. However, it is necessary to renew the application to the Constitutional Court, which should resolve the issue of the jurisdiction of Polish courts in reparations cases against German courts, which reject these types of lawsuits. Germans should be protected by the immunity enshrined in international law, which states that it is impossible to summon a foreign state to the court of another country. A request to the Constitutional Tribunal, filed by a group of United Right MPs in 2017, demands that in cases of compensation for war crimes, jurisdiction be given to the courts of countries where soldiers or officers have caused harm to Polish civilians.
Former Deputy Minister Mularczyk confirmed the extension of this application to the Constitutional Court, which is necessary due to the shutdown.
