Education Minister Barbara Nowacka outlined on Polsat News the changes to education introduced by Donald Tusk’s coalition, which in fact result in a dramatic decrease in demands for students. “Do we really have to judge everything?” – asked Barbara Nowacka.
Nowacka confirmed that there will be no homework at all in grades 1 to 3 of primary school, because… young people wanted that.
We have made agreements and we keep our agreements. It was a big call for the young people to catch their breath after school
– she said Barbara Nowacka.
Every parent knows what a horror it was with scrapbooks or making a feeder at the last minute and it wasn’t the child who was judged, it was the parent – his/her time, effort, it was an absolutely unfair system because with the bonus was parents who had more time and more manual skills, and hard workers had no time to help their children
she argued.
Moreover, in practice, students in groups 4 to 8 of primary school do not have to do homework, because it is not mandatory or assessed.
Homework is not assessed or required in groups 4 to 8. The teacher may assign work, but has no right to grade it or give it a 1 for lack of work
– she said. How should a student be motivated to do his homework and how should he receive a signal whether he has done it correctly?
However, this is not the end of the drastic drop in requirements for students of Polish schools, prepared by Donald Tusk’s coalition. From September, slimmed-down core curricula will be introduced. According to Nowacka, “this is a gain, it will be knowledge that is well learned and consolidated.”
“Do we really have to judge everything?”
Moreover, students do not have to read textbooks. Theoretically they will still be there, but reading them is not required and will not be graded.
Do we really have to judge everything? (…) I have had many meetings with methodologists. In Polish schools, giving grades is a problem; grades are given continuously and for everything, without talking to the student about what the grade is based on. We have forgotten knowledge, testing and checking
– said Nowacka.
The reading list will also be adjusted. Nowacka’s announcement shows that it can be expected that the classics of Polish and world literature will be eliminated in favor of contemporary books.
There will certainly be more contemporary 21st century literature and greater freedom for young people to choose these books
– said the head of the Ministry of Education.
What about teacher pay increases? Recently, accusations have even been made against the Ministry of Education by the Polish Teachers’ Union, due to the announcement that teacher pay increases will be lower than at least PLN 1,500 gross per teacher.
For the Prime Minister, the teaching profession is particularly important; what he said in Tarnów is a plan for the future. The Prime Minister said it confidently
— Barbara Nowacka defended Donald Tusk’s announcements during the election campaign.
We increase by 30 and 33 percent. for teachers who enter the profession, not less than PLN 1,500 (…) This is the beginning, the first step after years of humiliation. (…) March is the time when teachers will see equal pay increases
– she noted.
Nowacka made an outrageous statement on President Andrzej Duda’s announcement to pardon Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński again.
The president promised to be tough one day, but now I have the impression that he is so unstable in his decisions that he no longer knows whether he has pardoned or not, what the president tells him to do, what his advisors tell him, he created such a mess. Otherwise a very interesting story. He forgives Wąsik because Kamiński is not feeling well. I don’t understand it at all
– she said, callously referring to the health status of the detained MPs.
How can you motivate a student to do any work if homework in primary school is optional and not graded? The same applies to reading school texts. Will this increase the level of education in Poland or the opposite? It would be good if Barbara Nowacka would answer questions about this matter factually.
