In the statement made by the ministry, it was said: “A tsunami alert has been declared on the coast of the Sakhalin region and in the Tatar Strait in the Khabarovsk Region.”
It was stated that urgent measures were taken due to the strong earthquake of 7.5 magnitude that occurred in Japan (Honshu Island) on January 1.
It was reported that a water rise of up to 33 cm is expected in the coastal areas of the Vanino, Sovetsko-Gavansky, Ayano-Maisky and Okhotsk regions of the Khabarovsk Region. The Ministry of Emergencies added that the wave is expected to approach at 20:52 local time (13:52 Moscow time).
They emphasized that the information was transmitted to local authorities, port masters and ships in the waters of the Tatar Strait and the Sea of Okhotsk. Evacuation of the population is not necessary.
