Poland’s geopolitical position is weakening. Firstly, this is the effect of changing international political constellations. This could also be a consequence of the foreign policy of the current Polish government in the future, former Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau admitted on Radio Maryja.
In yesterday’s broadcast “News of the Day” issues of foreign policy and the international position of Poland at the end of 2923 were discussed.
The situation in Poland is much more difficult than at the beginning of this year
We must realize that the situation in Poland at the end of 2023 is much more difficult than at the beginning of this year
– said the PiS parliamentarian and former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He cited Russia’s successes in its aggression in Ukraine as one of the reasons: military and political successes.
We can see this year that Russia has incomparably greater demographic and military potential than Ukraine. There is no symmetry here. Moreover, Russia uses methods known from the First World War, making the number of victims absolutely irrelevant. What matters is the ultimate goal of this war, which is the virtual collapse of the Ukrainian state
– said Prof. Rau, explaining the current very difficult situation of Ukraine, which, despite the war, for example, has to feed itself and maintain its infrastructure. That is why the country urgently needs far-reaching international assistance. Above all, as he explained, Ukraine’s defeat could have far-reaching, dramatic consequences for Poland.
If Ukraine is defeated in this battle, Russia – in accordance with its imperial logic – will not stop at Ukraine’s borders. The hybrid war he is now waging against the West, but especially against the countries on NATO’s eastern flank – from Finland to Poland – could take another form, even into an armed attack.
– he said, giving the example of yesterday’s incident involving a Russian missile in Polish airspace.
Diversion from the Ukrainian theater
The West – obviously much stronger than Russia in every respect, but by no means united in its goals, positions or actions – is clearly giving up support for Ukraine that would ensure its effective defense, not to mention the recovery of lost territories and the restoration of sovereignty
– emphasized Prof. Zbigniew Rau.
Gradually – and this is very dangerous – the attention of Western societies is turning to other seditious regions of the world. We must remember Hamas’s aggression against Israel and the Israeli response. (…) This is absolutely in Russia’s interest because it diverts attention from the Ukrainian theater
– explains.
Most importantly, the former head of the Polish Foreign Ministry cited the perception of American political elites – both Democrats and Republicans – that China, and not Russia, is the main strategic threat to the future of the United States’ superpowers.
This is despite the fact that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has treated Russia as the biggest security threat since the Madrid summit
– added.
– noted the guest of the program on Radio Maryja.
A pro-German Polish government will not be in favor of very strong transatlantic ties in Europe
Other reasons for the deteriorating geopolitical situation in Poland include Prof. Rau mentioned “changes in the political constellation” in our country, mainly – as he said – “the takeover of the government by decidedly more pro-German groups, ready to to pursue – as we see every day in almost every dimension of internal policy – German interests.”
This government, unlike ours, is unlikely to be in favor of very strong transatlantic ties in Europe. This means that he will support both the vision and the policy of the so-called strategic autonomy of the European Union that threatens transatlantic unity. It will reward attitudes that should rightly be interpreted as elements of competition between the European Union and the United States – regardless of who will be in power in the US in the future.
– said the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
When asked about his successor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, Prof. Rau spoke of “the danger of neglecting an absolutely fundamental thing, namely the security of the Polish state.”
For me, the attitude of the current government towards the purchase of weapons for the Polish armed forces in Korea is a red flag. These contracts can be suspended
– he admitted, suggesting that the alternative to purchases from Korea for the current administration is of course the production of weapons from Germany, which is “uncertain.”
There is no doubt that Radosław Sikorski’s achievements included many pro-German accents and a rather nonchalant attitude towards transatlantic policy. We must fear a situation in which – as in every department of the current government – the interests of our German neighbor will be pursued.
– concluded Prof. Zbigniew Rau.
