The PiS government has achieved successes, but changes are sometimes necessary, and the new government in Warsaw gives hope for solving Poland’s problems in relations with the EU and better communication with the Joe Biden administration – said Georgette Mosbacher , former US ambassador to Poland, in an interview with PAP. However, she admitted that she was concerned about what she heard about the Tusk administration’s intentions regarding the future of the Three Seas Initiative.
Relations between Poland and the EU
The former US ambassador to Warsaw during Donald Trump’s administration said in an interview for PAP that she is still closely monitoring the situation in Poland and – despite political differences – looks hopefully at the new Polish government.
Change for change’s sake isn’t always a good idea, but sometimes a little rearrangement doesn’t hurt. And I think it might be positive, because it will solve the problems that Poland had with the European Union
– said Mosbacher, a businesswoman and member of the Atlantic Council think tank, where she co-leads a program on the Three Seas Initiative. As she admitted, even though she is “not a big fan of the EU”, this is very important in the context of Poland’s international position.
She added that the new administration may be an easier interlocutor for the current administration in Washington because of the similar values and similar ideology espoused by both government teams. She also drew attention to Prime Minister Tusk’s statements on the continuation of activities to strengthen state defense and the importance of NATO, which, in her opinion, were well received in Washington and give hope for further strengthening of Polish-American relations .
I was also encouraged by Tusk’s words about putting aside political differences. I hope this means there will be no ‘witch hunts’ or revenge as this can only waste the capital the new government brings in.
– Mosbacher noted.
Concerns about the future of the Three Seas Initiative
However, as she noted, she is concerned about the future of the Three Seas Initiative, a Polish-initiated project aimed at cooperation and infrastructure development in Central Europe, within the EU.
I have heard that the new government is not particularly interested in the Three Seas Initiative. It is true that I have not yet heard from representatives of the Tusk government, because such an opportunity has not yet arisen, but I hope that it will arise soon.
– said the former ambassador.
The Three Seas Initiative is perhaps one of the most important initiatives of its kind. It has given Central and Eastern Europe a stronger voice and tools that can strengthen its competitiveness. Many of these countries are so small that it is difficult for them to attract investment individually, and the Three Seas Initiative is a good mechanism to develop regional infrastructure at a Western level.
– she added.
She emphasized that the project has the support of the current US administration, which has provided $300 million in the first round of funding.
This is nothing. If the administration wasn’t interested in this project, they wouldn’t provide money for it
– she noted. At the same time, she stated that the project had already advanced to such an extent that it would develop even without Polish support.
Although Poland is the largest country in the region, twelve other countries are also participating in the initiative, the former ambassador noted.
She also said she did not expect any changes in the strategic projects that the previous authorities had initiated – with her personal involvement – such as the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland by the American concerns Westinghouse and Bechtel.

US presidential election
When asked about next year’s US presidential election, Mosbacher admitted that she “prays every day” for the victory of her former boss, with whom she still maintains a close relationship. According to her, Poland should not fear Donald Trump’s second term, which seems a likely scenario in light of the latest polls.
Trump was a strong supporter of Poland. He wanted to put a billion dollars into the Three Seas Initiative. Yes, he was criticized for his attitude towards NATO and his rhetoric. But look at the results: he made NATO spend more on its defense than ever before. He placed the headquarters of the U.S. Army’s V Corps in Poland. I have lobbied intensively for it myself and today it is a permanent basis. So I don’t think anyone should worry about Trump returning. And it certainly shouldn’t be Poland
