Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, who is the Pope’s envoy in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, said China could help achieve peace. He expressed this opinion in an interview with the newspaper. Corriere della Sera.
“Something is moving. I have been in Kiev and Moscow. I have been in Washington and Beijing. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians have recognized the role of the Vatican. The nuncios in the two capitals are doing an excellent job. Of course, we would like much greater results in the return of the children. “We will not miss any opportunity to do so. He does not believe that anything other than weapons will be needed to win a war,” he said, emphasizing that China “is a great and irreplaceable resource that can help bring peace to Ukraine.”
According to him, it is necessary to move away from the logic of dialogue as military victory and surrender as the only options. He noted that it is not naive to believe that conflicts can only reach a just peace through dialogue.
The Cardinal added that the Vatican supports the participation of the international community in resolving the Ukrainian conflict, which is the third actor and “can and must do much to find and guarantee appropriate solutions.”
