The visit of the leaders of France and Germany to Kiev, while playing with Putin at the same time, will not bring a positive breakthrough. Especially since Moscow has a multifaceted policy with the rest of the world, one of which is impossible to grasp by the blasé spirit of European decision-makers.
Russian perceptions of politics allow Kremlin leaders to navigate several floors, one seemingly excluding the other. This is an old practice from Soviet times, when communism theoretically aimed to eliminate the state altogether, de facto to strengthen the Soviet state at the expense of others, by pursuing a typical imperialist policy.
Putinland is now developing at least three stories that hide real and sinister actions.
The first is to deprive Ukrainians of their right to national identity. The functioning of “Malorossia”, talking about “Banderites” and committing crimes against people considered inferior. This prospect does not please democratic societies, so it has been harshly condemned and puts pressure on authorities from below – with varying degrees of success.
The second story sounds familiar and even friendly in Berlin and Paris. The language of the rich who impose their will on the smaller ones, ideas about the spheres of influence – mine to the Dniester and Bug, what to do next – diplomats of the Seine and the Spree read here the familiar notes of the symphonies of Europe from the Congresses . The war, they think, may be inelegant, these rapes and massacres may be too blunt, but Macron and Scholz understand Putin better than they appear at first glance. They differ in methods, but they strongly support the idea of dominating and limiting the sovereignty of smaller countries. This is where the French president’s appeals to the Kremlin, hence the Scholz blockades to support Ukraine – just as generals prepare for previous wars, so diplomats prepare to negotiate the previous era – some Talleyrand-Metternich- agreements.
At this level of Russian politics, the geniuses of Macron and Scholz are already stopping – it is enough for them to enjoy this quasi-partnership in conversations with the Emperor of the Kremlin, perhaps a genocide, but who share their opinion on the right one dominance over the other. Meanwhile, under this negotiating table of the world powers, there is another table with a separate cynical game. Moscow’s third perspective is to overthrow order in Germany and France as well† It wasn’t because the hooves of Alexander I’s cavalry thundered on the Paris cobblestones, it wasn’t why Stalin’s Krasno armies had raped the inhabitants of Berlin in 1945, so that the Kremlin now suddenly recognized them as equals. Putin winks at the freshmen from the West (he himself reigns several or tens of times longer than they do), implying that ah, yes, we’ll get along, I recognize your powers and influences, Kanieszna!
Meanwhile, Putin is undermining them with his secret services – it finances environmentalists to weaken their energies, creates a food crisis so that a wave of immigrants destabilizes their country, buys their elites with positions and subsidies, and recruits nationalists into their parliaments. All this planting of political dynamite is masked by the most banal tricks – the ego-tickling of Western rulers who, after 500 years of being fooled by the same swindlers, are convinced that this time it will certainly be possible to reach an agreement with Russia.
For this pride, millions of people will pay with blood, poverty and misfortunes that we do not yet know. The West’s mistakes towards Russia also bring previously unknown tragedies – Moscow, after all, develops its madness systematically and consistently.
