I know we’re only halfway through the calendar year, but I have to describe this photo as the best political photo of the year already.
Okay, we have to admit that it’s technically not a photo, but a screenshot from a TV show. It’s a scene so loaded with political symbols and emotions that I can’t resist presenting this candidacy.
As most of you probably know, this is a scene from the Polsat News program of the journalist Grzegorz Jankowski. His guests were Joanna Staniszkis from KO, councilor of Warsaw and Jan Śpiewak from the Free City of Warsaw association.
Let’s remember how this photo was taken.
surprising words
At some point, a discussion arose among program participants about why no street is named after the late President Lech Kaczynski. When Jankowski suggested that the name should replace the current Armii Ludowej Street, Staniszkis noted without hesitation that “the street is too worthy” to bear the name Lech Kaczyński.
President of your country! The man who died in the crash. Mayor of your city. opposition activist
– Jankowski reacted with shock to what the KO politician said about the late Lech Kaczynski.
We don’t like his twin brother who is just tragic
– Staniszkis continued her scandalous statement.
And that was when we could see the scene at the beginning of the text. The singer, who so far looked at the politician with amazement and disbelief, could not stand it and grabbed his head.
God I don’t believe what I’m listening to
He commented briefly.
Spontaneous response
His response was genuine. It was not performed, it was not intended for any political effect. You could tell by his attitude that he had just had enough. And that he can no longer listen to this nonsense.
The emotions he spontaneously showed at that moment were genuine. And his “facepalm” will probably soon become an internet hit and a template for many memes. Why? Because Singer’s response to the intellectual and political violence caused by common sense and decency in the total opposition mentality is something more and more of us can relate to.
More and more of us “don’t believe what they hear” and are just fed up.
Perhaps this is the most important symbolic message of this photo: at some point you can do nothing but grab your head and say: “enough”.
There are statements after which it is not worth continuing the discussion. You must “end the program”, just as the veteran journalist Jankowski did at the time.
This is truly the political photo of the year.
