Guyana and Venezuela have agreed to discuss the situation in the disputed Essequibo region without the use of force. This was reported by RIA News Referring to the joint statement issued after negotiations between the leaders of the two countries.

The parties agreed to resolve their differences in accordance with the 1966 Geneva Convention.

“Guyana and Venezuela will not threaten or use force against each other under any circumstances, including situations arising, directly or indirectly, from existing differences between both states,” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said.

He and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali also agreed to establish a foreign ministerial-level commission to interact on the Essequibo issue. The parties will meet on Thursday, December 14, on the Caribbean island of St. Met at St. Vincent.
