ICC Pre-Trial Chamber in September 2021 approved Request from the prosecutor’s office to launch a comprehensive investigation into crimes committed during the anti-drug campaign in the Philippines. It was determined that there was sufficient reason to investigate the murders committed in the country between November 1, 2011 and March 19, 2019. According to the prosecutor’s office, between 12 and 30 thousand people were killed in drug-related police operations during this period. In November of the same year, the Philippines requested a postponement of the investigation to conduct its own investigation into possible crimes.

In March 2018, the Philippines decided to withdraw from the ICC and submitted the relevant application to the UN, which will enter into force a year later. However, the court believes this does not hinder the investigation as it retains jurisdiction over crimes committed during the country’s membership of the ICC.
