Libyan Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh said that relations between Libya and Russia are at a very high level. He stated the following in his meeting with: RIA News, Moscow recognizes the legitimacy of government bodies elected by the Libyan people.
“Relations with Russia are very good. Russia has supported the rule of law in Libya from the very beginning, and therefore our relations are at a high level, as with other friendly countries that cooperate and respect the will of the Libyans,” he said.
Aguila Saleh said Russia’s support for Libya was “extremely necessary” as it helped reaffirm the legitimacy of the country’s parliament. “The State Duma has clearly expressed its support for the elected government, and this step is of great importance in confirming the legitimacy of the government elected by the Libyan people,” he added.
Currently, there are actually two governments in Libya: One in the East, led by Fethi Bashagha, and the other in Tripoli, led by Abdulhamid Dbeibah. It was previously planned to hold elections in the country in 2021, but they were canceled due to the lack of a constitutional framework. The official date of the elections has not been announced.
