Unanimity is not a pitfall. Easier decision making does not equal strength. The Polish delegation and the majority of delegations from our region within the European People’s Party (EPP) will be “against” – said MEP Andrzej Halicki (PO) during the debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, speaking about the draft EP report on the amendment of the EU treaties.
The European Parliament is debating the report of the European Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO), which recommends changes to the EU treaties. The main proposed change is the abolition of the principle of unanimity in EU Council voting in 65 areas.
Never before have we needed a European Union that is stronger and more capable in the face of threats, in the face of the war right next to us. But this document does not meet this need. Moreover, it weakens our community. Mr Verhofstadt, unanimity is not a pitfall. Easier decision making does not equal strength. What would happen if Ukraine got 51 percent? support from Member States or 66 percent Would this be stronger or weaker support for Ukraine, and would it mean strength or division for the European Union? Reforms are needed, but this document is not needed
– he said.
“We can do all this without treaty changes.”
He added that a common defense policy, a common cybersecurity policy and a common health policy are needed because this is what citizens expect.
We need a common energy policy because we have had a crisis. Donald Tusk proposed it in 2014, but you opposed it. We can do all this without any treaty changes, because the pandemic has shown that we can be effective in combating threats, including the war caused by Russia. What is needed is common sense. I appeal to common sense regarding this document. The Polish delegation and the majority of delegations from our region within the European People’s Party will be “against” because even this procedure is not serious. The provisions, very serious treaty provisions, change from hour to hour. We don’t even know what we’re going to vote for tomorrow. This is not a serious process when it comes to a subject as serious as treaty changes
– he concluded.
