During “Rymanowski’s Breakfast” on Polsat News there was a sharp discussion among the invited politicians about the case of Włodzimierz Karpiński, who will go straight from prison to the European Parliament. “There is a lack of reflection in Poland,” said the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paweł Jabłoński. A surprising vote came from Confederation MP Przemysław Wipler, who stated that the PO politician’s rights had been “violated”. Polish 2050 MP Michał Kobosko also argued about the abuse of the institution of “extraction detention”.
““Violation of civil rights”
The former treasurer of Warsaw City Hall is suspected of accepting a financial benefit in connection with the so-called garbage scandal. Włodzimierz Karpiński was arrested, but no charges were filed for nine months, and the court accepted further requests from the public prosecutor’s office to extend the arrest for fear of tampering.
Confederation MP Przemysław Wipler ruled that civil rights had been violated.
Pre-trial detention is used opportunistically by judges. 9 out of 10 decisions correspond to the request of the public prosecutor, these are statistics. Studies on this issue have been prepared by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and the Supreme Bar Council
– he emphasized.
This is a scandal, in the US he would have been convicted a long time ago, and in Poland the suspect is being held in inhumane conditions. Let’s not play cynicism, this is a violation of civil rights
– he said.
Presidential Minister Małgorzata Paprocka responded to Wipler, but also to other opposition politicians.
Why are you downplaying the importance of this issue: isn’t corruption a serious crime?
– she asked, emphasizing that this issue could not be “called out”.
Hołownia’s decision
Szymon Hołownia, who became chairman of the Sejm last Monday, signed documents informing about Karpiński’s priority in taking up the mandate of Member of the European Parliament.
It is not the role of Szymon Hołownia to decide the further fate of Włodzimierz Karpiński. The Marshal of the Sejm assured that in this case too there would be no freezer in the room. And he couldn’t help signing the application in this matter
– emphasized Michał Kobosko, MP from Poland 2050, when asked about this issue.
I think it was the so-called extraction arrest – the prosecutor’s office hoped that the detainee might say something, or might find something. You can’t detain someone for nine months without any evidence
– said the parliamentarian. To the presenter’s comment that the practice of prolonging detention without a verdict was also applied in previous years, left MP Anna Maria Żukowska replied:
The record holder spent eight years in detention without a sentence.

“‘A symbol of the rule of law of the new team’
According to KO parliamentarian Robert Kropiwnicki, the actions of the public prosecutor’s office against the PO politician were politically motivated.
After legislative changes by PiS, a judge who does not agree to the extension of pre-trial detention must write an extensive explanation. Furthermore, the prosecutor’s office was unable to prepare an indictment for nine months, during which time Karpiński was interrogated three times.
– said Kropiwnicki, who assessed the prosecutor’s action as “a simplification towards Zbigniew Ziobro.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński pointed out that we faced a similar situation in other EU countries, but in Poland there was no reflection.
In Spain, MEPs were elected from the Catalan party; one of them was in custody. The case was considered by the CJEU, but Madrid disagreed with the ruling
– he remembered.
Ultimately, this MEP’s mandate expired. There was a lack of reflection in Poland
– emphasized Jabłoński, in whose opinion the Karpiński case is a symbol of the “rule of law of the new team”.
