““The Mystery of October 15”
In the article “The Secret of October 15”, the team of the weekly magazine “Sieci” and the portal wPolityce.pl summarizes with experts the results of the October elections and analyzes the already available data on Poland’s vote. First, they show that a similar number of voters voted for PiS (7.6 million) as the number of voters who supported the government four years earlier (8 million).
PiS mainly lost voters under the age of 40 (350,000 in the age groups 18-29 and 30-39). The gap was half filled thanks to people over 60 years old. It can be assumed that the loss of younger voters is related to ideological issues, but other factors may also be important, for example greater exposure of such voters to content that damages the image of PiS, which is flooded with the Internet – real and imagined scandals from the group. Indirect evidence could be the situation of the Confederation, which is criticized online by NGOs supporting the opposition for its conservative approach to ideological issues. This did not stop the country from strengthening its position among voters under 40 and maintaining support among the youngest group
– we read in the article.
It cannot be denied that the high turnout was an important factor in determining the election results.
Satisfaction with the large mobilization of almost the entire voter base currently available to PiS does not mean that the problems blocking the growth of support and attracting new groups of voters should not be solved. It is for this reason that the growing number of voters worked in the opposition’s favor. With 3.1 million new voters, the opposition added 2.6 million votes to its result compared to the 2019 elections. This means that additional voters also voted for PiS at this rate, but the increase in turnout had a stronger impact on the diversified offer of the opposition (four years ago PiS was the beneficiary of a much larger number of voters)
– analyzed by the editors.
“They want to take over the public media for good.”
The parties that have been in opposition until now make no secret of the fact that they want to take control of the public media at all costs. Krzysztof Czabański, Chairman of the National Media Council, talks to Jacek Karnowski about the risk of destroying freedom of expression in Poland and the systematic elimination of any message related to tradition, conservatism or faith.
Experience has taught the forces of the Third Polish Republic that elections can be lost, and that, as has happened in recent years, the public media may no longer be ‘TVN bis’ or ‘Onet bis’. Now if they take control of TVP and Polish Radio, they will reconnect the cable from Wiertnicza to Woronicza and the message will be the same everywhere. And anything that goes beyond the left-liberal narrative will be pushed to the margins of social life. Moreover, this story will be served by media with foreign capital, that is, they will represent our interests only if this does not conflict with the interests of the owner. So not in the first place
– emphasizes the chairman of the National Media Council.
Czabański analyzes various ways in which the new government can try to destroy TVP and other public media. One of them is the financial path.
The new government will try to starve the public media, get them into trouble and then use the bad economic situation to justify extralegal actions such as the introduction of commissioners. And this scenario of an attack on the financial foundations will be difficult to stop. Because public media depends solely on subscriptions and advertising revenue, they will be forced to destroy themselves. Many things are almost impossible to achieve. With such strong unions, even layoffs cost a lot. There are many legal obligations, special programs that must be published and cannot be deviated from without breaking the law. Restructuring is incredibly expensive
– to explain.
““Israel, Gaza and the Polish Question”
Konrad Kołodziejski, in the article “Israel, Gaza and the Polish Question”, discusses the issue of the Palestinian-Israeli war and its impact on Polish liberal-left circles. The journalist notes that conservative circles are distancing themselves from the ongoing conflict because “(…) we have no reason to support both sides.”
We share cultural differences with the Palestinians and we see the threat posed by the influx of Muslim immigration. In turn, Israel does not arouse any sympathy because of its insane nationalism, which has repeatedly adopted a sharply anti-Polish face (…). However, the situation is different on the liberal-left, which has so far been very consistent in proclaiming freedom slogans and supporting the idea of resettling illegal immigrants. Now there is a serious crack in this area
– writes Kołodziejski.
While much of the left, following their Western mentors, consistently leans toward pacifism, condemning Israel and demanding an end to fighting and aid for the civilian population, the broadly understood liberal trend, which can be described very simply as The Clientele of PO followed completely the opposite direction. If we look at what the biggest fanatics of the liberal side, such as Tomasz Lis, write, we will learn from them that Israel must be supported at all costs.
– notes the author.
The journalist also draws attention to a breakthrough in the immigrant issue.
Interestingly, the same people recently demanded the entry of immigrants who stormed our border with Belarus and cried over the fate of Ibrahim, who – according to the legend in the liberal media – would swim to Poland for six days. (…) But when the war broke out in Gaza, the switch started to change. And completely different voices appeared
– underlined.
