As the Central Election Commission of Lithuania stated, parties in the republic will now be able to register their candidates with the election commission. This also paves the way for self-nominated applications. The elections will be held on May 12, 2024, and if no candidate receives a majority of the votes, a runoff will likely be held on May 26.

Since Lithuania is a parliamentary republic, the powers of the president in the country are significantly limited. There are currently four candidates for this post: former commander of the Lithuanian army, retired Lieutenant General Valdas Tutkus, Mayor of Kazlu Ruda Mantas Varaska, the country’s former Minister of Health Aurelijus Veriga, and current Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte. At the same time, the current president of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, also has the opportunity to participate in the vote, but he has not yet expressed his stance on this issue.
