I have sent a letter to all deputies and senators of the next term of the Sejm and Senate, calling for the continuation of activities aimed at settling the issue of reparations, compensation and compensation to which Poland is entitled from Germany, said the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Arkadiusz Mularczyk.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that he had “sent a letter to all parliamentarians of the 10th and 11th terms with an appeal to continue the activities aimed at regulating the issue of reparations, compensation and compensation where Poland is entitled to from Germany because of the German aggression and occupation in the years 1939-1945.”
An appeal to parliamentarians
As he highlighted, “a letter calling on MPs and Senators, together with an abbreviated version of the report, will be sent today and distributed to new MPs from all parliamentary clubs.” The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that he plans to send similar letters to the heads of all parliamentary clubs that will be created in the next term of the Sejm, “also calling on these parliamentary clubs to to be involved in the process of seeking reparations from Germany, and in the future, after the report is prepared, also from Russia.”
The deputy minister asked parliamentarians for “decisive continuation of activities in the tenth term of the Sejm” and informed about the war losses from the Institute for War Losses. J. Karski is working on a report on “the losses inflicted on Poland by the USSR during the Second World War, as well as the subsequent exploitation of our country.”
I am convinced that only starting a dialogue with the German side on reparations, compensation and compensation for the demographic and material losses suffered by Poland can allow the building of a real partnership and good neighborly relations. Future Polish-German relations cannot be based on empty gestures and words about moral responsibility, but on real actions and compensation.
– wrote the deputy minister.
During the press conference, Mularczyk recalled that on September 14, 2022, the Sejm adopted a resolution in which “it obliged the Polish government to pursue all possible political and diplomatic actions aimed at obtaining reparations from Germany.” He added that a similar resolution was passed in 2004.
Therefore, I call on all parliamentarians and senators of the next term of the Sejm and Senate to continue these activities
– Mularczyk noted.
These actions aimed at obtaining fundamental justice for Poland and Poles are undoubtedly a patriotic and moral element for all new parliamentarians and senators.
– added.
He emphasized that there is political consensus in Poland on this issue. As he explained, both resolutions were passed by overwhelming majorities.
There is also enormous support in Polish society for Poland’s claims against Germany
– added.
Therefore, I hope that the Sejm and Senate as well as the new government will effectively raise this issue in bilateral relations, as well as in the forums of international organizations, in the next term.
– emphasized the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Support from local governments
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that – according to preliminary information – more than 140 local governments have adopted resolutions of intent following his call in early August for support for the government’s actions in applying for compensation. It was addressed to all local authorities in Poland.
Mularczyk emphasized that “Germany never fulfilled the issue of reparations after the end of the Second World War, and to this day Poland does not have any bilateral agreement with Germany that would settle this issue.”
He also recalled that on April 18 this year the Council of Ministers had unanimously adopted a resolution stating that the issue of reparations and compensations in Polish-German relations had never been closed.
Poland has never waived reparations and the Polish government is demanding that this issue be resolved
– he said.
He added: “This is important because it gives the next government a basis for carrying out diplomatic and bilateral activities in relations with Germany.”
The deputy minister added that continued activities in the international arena are “extremely important” to popularize knowledge on the subject.
September 1 last year a report was presented on the losses suffered by Poland as a result of German aggression and occupation during the Second World War. October 3 last year Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau signed a diplomatic note on the German side about war compensation. Poland is demanding, among other things, compensation for material and intangible losses amounting to PLN 6 trillion, PLN 220 billion, PLN 609 million and compensation for damages.
January 3 this year The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to this note. According to the German government, the issue of reparations and compensation for war losses remains closed and the German government has no intention of starting negotiations on this matter.
