I welcome the decision of the European Commission, which recommends starting accession negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina and granting Georgia the status of a candidate country for the EU, President Andrzej Duda emphasized on Wednesday.
The enlargement of the European Union is one of the priorities of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council in 2025. That is why I welcome the decision of the European Commission, which recommends starting accession negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia to grant EU candidate status.

On Wednesday, the European Commission presented a report on the state of Ukraine’s preparations for membership of the European Union. It was recommended to start accession negotiations with this country. A similar decision was also taken in the case of Moldova and – conditionally – Bosnia and Herzegovina. Georgia also received the status of a candidate country.
If the governments of the EU member states agree to the European Commission’s recommendation, the EU will, for the first time in history, begin accession negotiations with a country at war.
Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022 and was granted EU candidate status in June 2022.
