As an RMF FM reporter discovered, Włodzimierz Karpiński agreed to take up the mandate of a Member of the European Parliament. This means that he will go from detention to hearings in Brussels and Strasbourg. Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro commented on the situation.
On February 27, 2023, Karpiński was detained by CBA agents. He was accused of corruption and the court placed him under temporary arrest for three months.
Why can the former finance minister in the government of Donald Tusk and Ewa Kopacz be released? The PO politician participated in the 2019 elections, but did not win a mandate. Krzysztof Hetman was elected, but was given a mandate as a member of the Sejm. His place could have been taken by Joanna Mucha, but she also entered the Sejm. The next person waiting to become a Member of the European Parliament was Riad Haidar, but he died in May. In this way the mandate goes to Włodzimierz Karpiński.
Karpiński has already sent a letter to the chairman of the Sejm stating that he will take up the mandate.

And now the riddle. “Our” new Member of Parliament, suspected by the Public Prosecution Service of having paid millions of dollars in bribes for arranging waste collection tenders in Warsaw and who has been taken into custody by the court, he will vote in the European Parliament in the interest of Poland or in the interest of Poland? of the pro-German majority, which guarantees him the maintenance of EU immunity?
– asked the Attorney General on the X platform (formerly: Twitter).
The situation is unprecedented. Karpiński will exchange his cell for… an office in Brussels.
