This solution was not a subject of discussion or settlement with the German side. Moreover, for many reasons, including legal, this is completely excluded – deputy head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration Bartosz Grodecki told PAP, referring to the words of Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD), who said that a better option would be if Germany could carry out border controls on Polish territory.
The German Federal Police has been carrying out border controls since mid-October, including: Due to migratory pressure. Checks are carried out directly at former border crossings, but within their own territory, sometimes a few kilometers from the border with Poland, they cause miles of traffic jams on both sides of the border.
Proposal by the Prime Minister of Brandenburg
According to Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke, it would be a better option if such inspections were carried out by German services on Polish territory.
A better option would be – and I would also like it if we could have discussions with the Polish government, which is currently a bit difficult in the case of Poland, but it needs to be done urgently – if we could already carry out such inspections . on Polish territory, removing them from the border, thus eliminating the inconvenience associated with such controls for the border area
– Woidke explained in an interview with the German channel Deutschlandfunk.
Poland’s response
This solution was not a subject of discussion or settlement with the German side. Moreover, this is completely excluded for many reasons, including legal ones
– Bartosz Grodecki, Deputy Head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, answers when asked about this idea.
According to him, border controls always slow down traffic, and implementing them on Polish territory would only reduce queues at border crossings, not eliminate them.
It’s impossible. If Germans are bothered by queues at intersections, they might as well carry out checks on their own territory
– notes Grodecki and emphasizes that there is no legal basis on which Germany could control access to the territory of its country on the Polish side.
According to the deputy head of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the internal border controls carried out by Germany are the result of an overly liberal migration policy.
According to the Schengen Borders Code, internal border controls were to be introduced as a last resort, i.e. carried out when a crisis situation actually occurs.
– he said.
Schengen erosion
He added that we are currently “facing a slow erosion of the Schengen system, one of the pillars of the European Union and undoubtedly one of its successes.” As he noted, the European Commission paid too little attention to the security of the zone, strengthening the readmission, protecting the external borders and cooperation with countries of origin. Instead, solutions were adopted under the pact “which emphasizes the relocation of migrants.”
Grodecki recalled that Western Europe, and Germany in particular, are the destinations of illegal migration.
The only answer the federal government has left is to impose controls at the borders, creating queues
– said Grodecki.
He added that due to the lack of appropriate mechanisms and currently too open migration policies, subsequent border controls have introduced, among others: Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria.
We have no other tools to defend ourselves against illegal migration, which means that the entire Schengen area – a blessing we know – is coming to an end before our eyes.
– he said.
According to him, the entire international protection system is being abused and deep reforms are needed.
The Community must implement a comprehensive reform of migration policy, starting from changing the model of cooperation with third countries, through the protection of external borders, fast and effective asylum procedures, and ending with effective readmissions, the fight against human trafficking and the instrumentalization of migration.
– he said.
When asked how many illegal migrants could come from Poland to Germany, he pointed out that this data was “very difficult to estimate” because – as he pointed out – there is no good, reliable benchmark.
Germany relies on information from migrants, and it is a destination country where almost all migration routes intersect.
– he noted.
