I fear that the head of the PO, Donald Tusk, will trade the issue of Germany’s reparations for beads; that these will not even be reparations, but compensation for a small group of survivors – said the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Arkadiusz Mularczyk, on RMF FM on Thursday.
“Tusk will pay reparations
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked whether he was not afraid that the potential future government of the current opposition parties would raise the issue of reparations from Germany.
According to Mularczyk, PO head Donald Tusk may stop demanding reparations from Germany for the post-World War II destruction if he becomes prime minister.
I fear that Donald Tusk will trade the issue of reparations for beads. (…) That for a small amount of money for the survivors he will simply put an end to the issue of reparations forever
– said Mularczyk.
I’m afraid it’s not even about reparations, but about some kind of compensation for a small group of the living. Donald Tusk could go this way. But we won’t allow it. We have a report detailing the amounts that Poland has the right to claim from Germany for war damages and war crimes committed in Poland
– added.
Mularczyk noted that the topic of reparations is present in the debate on the international arena, and there is also a lot of commentary on the topic of German reparations for Poland.
The case received a lot of international publicity. Today everyone is aware of this issue, both in the US Congress and in the European Parliament. They know about it, especially in Berlin
– emphasized the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This shows that the issue of responsibility, compensation and reparations is one that will not go away because one formation or another wins.
– added.
On September 1 last year, a report was presented on the losses suffered by Poland as a result of German aggression and occupation during World War II. On October 3 last year, Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau signed a diplomatic note on the German side about war compensation. Poland is demanding, among other things, compensation for material and intangible losses amounting to PLN 6 trillion, PLN 220 billion, PLN 609 million and compensation for damages.
January 3 this year The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to this note. According to the German government, the issue of reparations and compensation for war losses remains closed and the German government has no intention of starting negotiations on this matter.
