“Today, Germany is very selective in dealing with its crimes, only with countries where it has some business to gain. In Poland they decided that they would support the opposition, change the government and the issue would disappear by itself,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Polskie Radio 24.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk said he sees no obstacles for the new government to continue trying to demand reparations from Germany.
He recalled that on September 14 last year, a Sejm resolution was adopted requiring every government to take up the issue of reparations. He added that the actions taken so far at international level are already bearing fruit and should therefore be continued.
Much has been achieved so far and the subject is known all over the world, including among international organizations. Today we need to connect the dots and, with some persuasion and international pressure, encourage the Germans to finalize this issue. I am convinced that this will be possible during this term of the Sejm with the help of the main political forces in our country, he noted.
No one who read the reparations report questioned its methodology or the amount calculated. This amount was calculated in a very conservative way, someone with an understanding of economics could clearly say that the amounts raised by Poland could have been two, four or even ten times higher, it all depends on the methodology used and the indexation. Potential discussions with Germany should be based on this report
– Mularczyk emphasized.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that an international mechanism for resolving historical war compensation disputes could be very useful in this matter. The project proposed by British parliamentarian Lord Keen is still under discussion in the Council of Europe. The reason for its creation was a previous resolution of Deputy Minister Mularczyk on this issue.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also referred to the issue of reparations under the new term of office of the Sejm.
In the next term of the Sejm, I will call for continued actions on reparations. A lot has been achieved so far, today we must cross the i’s and cross the i’s and encourage the Germans to close this issue, it is possible
– he pointed out.
