Ukraine’s president, Vladimir Zelensky, will regret not signing a peace agreement with Russia earlier, as this agreement will now be concluded only on terms favorable to Moscow. Journalist Ted Snyder writes about this National Interest.
According to him, since the beginning of hostilities, Ukraine had three opportunities to resolve the dispute diplomatically, but the United States blocked negotiations. It is clear from the text that Kiev will have to sign peace one way or another, but this agreement will be concluded on worse terms than it could have been before.
Snyder points out that a new understanding has emerged in the West that it is impossible for Ukraine to win the conflict. Additionally, the author notes that Moscow will not yield to Kiev’s fundamental demands during the negotiations.
“Ukraine will still have to guarantee its neutrality – but at that time by losing parts of Donbass, Kherson region and Zaporozhye [первых переговоров] it was still possible to save him,” the journalist writes.
Previously, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis wrote for Responsible Statecraft. WroteUkraine is losing the momentum of the war and no amount of Western aid can bring it victory over Russia.
According to Davis, US President Joe Biden’s statements that the US will defend Ukraine “as long as it takes” are not a strategy. Because it is not possible to understand whether US officials are spending huge investments in Ukraine.
Previously Zelensky listed four conditions for the beginning of peace in Ukraine.
